Best Fantasy Football FAAB Pickups for Shallow Leagues (10 and 12 Teams)
WR Zay Flowers, Baltimore Ravens
The rookie made quite an impression in his debut. With Mark Andrews missing the game, Flowers’ target share was higher than it might be moving forward, but it has to be noted that he caught nine of his 10 targets for 78 yards. He looks to be the number-one WR in this offense and should be scooped up this week in the shallow leagues. I am willing to spend 16-18% of my remaining budget in PPR formats and 12-14% in 0.5 PPR on Flowers.
WR Kendrick Bourne, New England Patriots
Bourne led the Patriots with 11 targets in their Week 1 loss to the Eagles. He has been in the Patriots' system longer than any of their other WRs, and it showed in this game. Mac Jones continued to look his way in big moments, and Bourne rewarded him by making six catches for 64 yards and two big TDs. I would spend 3% of my FAAB on Bourne in a 10-team league but would spend upwards of 7-8% in a 12-team league.
WR Puka Nacua, Los Angeles Rams
He might still be available in your deeper leagues, so take a look, but I am sure he is sitting on the waiver wire in your shallower leagues. With Cooper Kupp injured, Matthew Stafford had to find a new top WR threat, and Nacua was that guy early and often. The rookie saw 15 targets, making 10 catches for 119 yards in the Rams' big road win over the Seahawks. Nacua is the real deal, and he is worth up to 20% of your remaining FAAB. I would prioritize him over both Bourne and Meyers.
WR Jakobi Meyers, Las Vegas Raiders
You will have to monitor Meyer's health status before locking in your bids, as he was in the midst of a fantastic game before he took a hit to the head and was taken into the locker room. Meyers led the Raiders in targets against the Broncos and benefited from Davante Adams’ presence and Jimmy Garoppolo’s accuracy. He grabbed nine passes for 81 yards and two TDs. If Meyers is able to avoid a multiple-week absence, he should be added in all 12-team formats for 4-6% of your FAAB.
RB Justice Hill and Gus Edwards, Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens won their season opener, but it came at a cost. They lost RB J.K. Dobbins to a torn Achilles and he will miss the remainder of the season. In Dobbins’ absence, Hill saw the red zone touches and turned those opportunities into two TDs, but it was Edwards who was the much more effective runner. Expect a pretty even split in the carries between these guys over the next couple of weeks until one of them establishes themself over the other. If you roster Dobbins, you are going to want to drop 10% of your remaining budget on one of Gus or Hill. I personally lean toward Gus, but I also think you need to proceed with caution because no one would be surprised if the Ravens went out and signed Kareem Hunt. If Hunt is available in your league, I would look to add him this week as well for 5% of your budget.
Best Fantasy Football FAAB Pickups for Deep Leagues (14 and 16 Teams)
TE Hayden Hurst, Carolina Panthers
If you don’t roster one of the top TEs in fantasy and you play in deep leagues, it is never a bad idea to ride a hot hand or pick up a player who might benefit from his situation. Hurst is the most experienced and established pass catcher in this Panthers offense, and it’s fairly common to see a rookie QB lean on their TE in the early stages of the season. Bryce Young targeted Hurst more than anyone else in Week 1, and it resulted in a solid five-catch, 41-yard, and one-TD performance. Pick up Hurst in your deepest leagues for 4% of your remaining budget.
WR Robert Woods, Houston Texans
Similar to the situation with Hurst, rookie QBs are going to latch onto veteran pass catchers. In Week 1, we saw C.J. Stroud do just that with Robert Woods. Woods saw 10 targets, catching six of them for 57 yards. He was key on third downs and should continue to see plenty of targets as long as he remains healthy. If you play in PPR leagues, Woods is worthy of 5-8% of your remaining FAAB.
RB Kyren Williams, Los Angeles Rams
Cam Akers is still the starting RB for the Rams. So don’t get carried away with your bids this week on Williams. There might be closer to a 60/40 split, though, compared to a 70/30 or 75/25 that might have been expected, due to the fact that Akers averaged 1.3 YPC on 22 carries while Williams averaged 3.5 YPC on 15 carries. If you want to get him this week, you will need to spend at least 8-12% of your FAAB. It’s a good gamble to take in case he continues to see a good chunk of touches and red zone opportunities.
RB Tyler Allgeier, Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons' pass offense is going to be pretty bad this year once again. They have a generational talent in Bijan Robinson at RB, but this team might try to run the ball 30 times per game and that leaves 12-15 carries a game for Allgeier who was good a year ago and very good in Week 1. Allgeier carried the ball 15 times for 75 yards and two TDs while also catching three passes for 19 yards. He is a good backup bid to Williams this week, and you should look to spend 7-9% of your remaining FAAB on him.
