NFL Final Roster Cut Predictions: Alexander Mattison, Odell Beckham, Kadarius Toney and More
These players could be cut as teams trim their rosters down to 53 players.
Quarterbacks
Tyler Huntley, Cleveland Browns
The former Raven once looked like a promising backup for Lamar Jackson before sputtering in more recent opportunities. It now looks like he's about to get cut by another AFC North club. Odds are he'll find himself another home in the not-too-distant future. He's a good fit for a team with a mobile quarterback where he can be plugged in with the team not having to make a drastic change to the system they already have in place.
Bailey Zappe, New England Patriots
Zappe has starting experience and has proven he's pretty much on par with Mac Jones. That's not an overly high bar, but it's something. You could definitely do worse when it comes to bringing in a backup QB. With a new regime in New England and the team bringing in Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye this offseason, they will likely look to move on from Zappe. However, it would be a surprise if he doesn't catch on somewhere else sooner rather than later.
Taylor Heinicke, Atlanta Falcons
This is a very similar situation to Zappe. Heinicke has significant starting experience and has even looked decent at times during his run as a starter. Still, it's unlikely that he'll be able to make a roster that features Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix in Atlanta. He'll be a solid acquisition for a team looking to add a dependable backup for the 2024 season.
Running Backs
Jeff Wilson Jr., Miami Dolphins
Wilson is a surprise cut, which I've been predicting for a few months now, despite most projecting him to make the final 53-man roster. Raheem Mostert, De'Von Achane, and rookie Jaylen Wright are all locks to make the final roster. However, we are projecting Chris Brooks to make the team over Wilson. He brings an element of size to the backfield that the team otherwise is lacking. At this point in his career, there isn't much that Wilson can add to an offense full of explosive weapons.
Samaje Perine, Denver Broncos
It's already being reported that the Broncos are likely to move on from Perine. The addition of rookie Audric Estime appears to have doomed his future with the team. Things never quite went as either Perine or the Broncos hoped in Denver. He's still a capable pass-catching back who could find himself with a relevant role as a third-down back with another team once he finds himself on the open market.
Alexander Mattison, Las Vegas Raiders
After flopping in his opportunity as a starter in Minnesota last season, Mattison found himself with an opportunity to carve out a significant role in Vegas this season as part of a mediocre-at-best backfield. Things haven't gone great so far as he's been comparable to younger and cheaper backs all summer. The team may just cut bait and move on from the disappointing back. With that said, odds are he will catch on somewhere else thanks to his impressive run as a backup to Dalvin Cook in Minnesota prior to his 2023 flop.
Wide Receivers
Odell Beckham Jr., Miami Dolphins
There have been a lot of weird reports surrounding Beckham in Miami and rumors that he may not be healthy enough to suit up again as an NFL player. With young wideouts like Malik Washington and Erik Ezukanma generating buzz this summer for the Dolphins there is a chance the team just cuts their losses and moves on from Beckham who has been a shell of himself for years anyway. It was a bad signing, to begin with for a guy who hasn't been anything special since 2018 and has since suffered two torn ACLs.
David Bell, Cleveland Browns
Bell has been a fantasy darling for years in the dynasty community who just never really panned out. He has all the physical ability but just hasn't quite been able to put it all together in the NFL. This is a guy who if he lands in the right situation could have a late-career resurgence and burst on the scene seemingly out of nowhere. If he is cut, he won't be on the market for very long. The Washington Commanders would be a very interesting landing spot for Bell, as would the New York Jets.
Kadarius Toney, Kansas City Chiefs
Toney's time in Kansas City has been an unmitigated disaster. He hasn't been able to stay healthy for any stretch of time and in the off chance he is on the field he's doing something ridiculous to hurt the team more than he's helping. This once promising first-round pick has fallen out of favor with the Chiefs and potentially the NFL. Undoubtedly, there's a team that will take a chance on his talent, nevertheless, it's hard to imagine that it will work out. There are a few teams where his signing would raise eyebrows though. Specifically the Dolphins and 49ers would peak the curiosity of fantasy owners.
