Week 6 of the NFL regular season wrapped up with an entertaining, but sloppy AFC East battle between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets.

Let’s discuss some fantasy football takeaways from the contest. Also be sure to check out takeaways from Sunday’s games, along with the IDP roundup.

Team Stats

Buffalo hit a 22-yard field goal with under four minutes to play to prevail 23-20 over New York.

Buffalo had 359 total yards of offense, with 149 rushing yards and 215 passing yards. The Bills committed 11 penalties, were sacked twice and did not have a turnover.

New York had 393 total yards on offense, with 294 passing yards and 121 rushing yards. The Jets committed 11 penalties, turned the ball over once and were sacked three times.

Davis, Johnson Power Bills’ Running Game

James Cook was inactive for the game with a toe injury, which thrust Ray Davis and Ty Johnson into the spotlight. The young RBs delivered.

Davis got 20 rushing attempts, going for 97 yards. He added 55 receiving yards on three catches and targets.

Johnson had 34 rushing yards on four carries and was not targeted in the passing game.

Buffalo ran 69 offensive plays, and Davis was on the field for 40 of them. Johnson played 25 snaps.

Cook’s injury is not viewed to be a long-term one, but after the way Davis and Johnson performed, the Bills could maybe decide to be a little more cautious with Cook.

At the very least, Davis’ play probably means he gets more touches and snaps going forward. Cook’s starting role is safe, but Davis might be given more work moving forward in an effort to keep Cook fresh for the playoffs.

I still think Cook will be a good starting option every week, but Davis could definitely be worth a start in deeper leagues, especially against favorable defensive matchups.

Allen Spreads the Ball Around

Josh Allen had another mistake-free game on Monday, and he didn’t lock in on any one target.

Allen was 19-of-25 passing for 215 yards and two touchdowns. He added 18 rushing yards and a score on nine attempts. That’s not a monster fantasy showing, but the three total TDs mixed with no turnovers made for a good fantasy total. It was also a tough defensive matchup for him, showing us all once again that he still needs to be started every time he’s playing.

Tight end Dalton Kincaid was the top pass catcher, going for 51 yards on six catches and seven targets. It was the most yards Kincaid has produced this season, along with his most catches and tied for the most targets.

Kincaid hasn’t lived up to his draft hype, but this performance was a positive one, and should get him in more starting lineups moving forward.

Curtis Samuel had 44 yards on three catches and four targets. It was easily Samuel’s best game of the season. He’s still several good showings away from being considered a starter in standard leagues, but he could be worth a chance in a pinch in some deeper setups.

Keon Coleman was held to 26 yards on three catches and four targets. He’s had a couple decent games this season, but nothing too spectacular. Coleman is another deep league starting option only at this point.

Khalil Shakir played through an injury and finished with 19 yards on two catches and targets. He only played 26 snaps, and that isn’t likely to continue when he’s healthy. Even so, Shakir is a borderline starting option in standard leagues, but a much safer option in deeper leagues.

Dawson Knox and Mack Hollins had one catch each, but they scored on each grab. Knox had a 12-yard TD grab on his only target, while Hollins caught an 8-yard TD across his two targets.

It was just Knox’s fourth catch of the season, so while it was nice to see him get in the end zone, he’s several good performances from even being a deep league starting option.

Hollins only has seven catches on the season, so he’s another one to avoid in all formats. He was coming off back-to-back six-target games, but after another low output, he’s not one to play.

Breece Hall Gets Going

Hall had a fantastic showing on Monday under a new-look coaching staff. He rushed 18 times for 113 yards and added 56 receiving yards on five catches and six targets.

It was just the second time this season that Hall topped 100 total yards in a game. It was also the most touches he’s gotten through six weeks. This performance should ease the mind of fantasy owners who roster him.

Another thing to note is that Braelon Allen only got three touches - three rushes for eight yards, while failing to catch two targets. He played 12 snaps to 55 for Hall, while the Jets got 63 overall.

Hall was one I mentioned as a player to target after his slowish start, primarily because his schedule the rest of the season is very favorable. Expect more big games from Hall as the Jets look to keep Aaron Rodgers from taking so many hits.

Speaking of Rodgers…

Rodgers had a pretty good fantasy showing, with his only blemish being a late interception. Rodgers was 23-of-35 passing for 294 yards, two touchdowns and the pick.

It was his most passing yards in a game this season, and the fourth time he’s gone over 200 yards - he’s been at or over 225 yards in all those games. It was also the fourth time he’s thrown two touchdowns in a game.

Rodgers is a decent streaming option every week, but probably not someone who will be a good fantasy performer week in and week out. Utilize Rodgers in some more favorable matchups if you are struggling at the fantasy QB position.

Lazard, Wilson the Top Pass Catchers

Garrett Wilson was the top-targeted pass catcher again for New York, but Allen Lazard also had a great game.

Wilson had eight catches for 107 yards and a touchdown across 10 targets. Lazard had 114 yards and a score on six grabs and seven targets.

Wilson went over 100 yards and scored for a second straight game. After some down performances in weeks 2-4, Wilson is back to being a top-end fantasy wideout. Keep starting him every week.

Lazard just keeps showing up in one way or another. He has five touchdown receptions on the season, and has now gone over 45 receiving yards four times.

Don’t expect these kinds of numbers every week from Lazard, but he’s definitely on the flex starting line every week. With at least seven targets in each of the past three games, he should get a decent amount of starts for the team’s next game.

Conklin, Williams are Nearly No Shows

Outside Wilson, Lazard and Hall, no other New York pass catcher had over 10 receiving yards.

Tight end Tyler Conklin had 10 yards on two catches and three targets. Backup Jeremy Ruckert had seven yards on two catches and three targets.

Mike Williams was targeted three times, but failed to catch any passes.

Conklin played 73% of the team’s snaps, which is actually a low mark for him. His big amount of snaps played makes him a decent streaming option every week, but these kinds of performances are definitely possible too.

This was the first time since week 1 that Williams failed to make a catch. He’s not playing a ton of snaps, and that leaves him as a deep league starting option only, and a pretty weak one at that.

IDP Standouts

New York’s Jamien Sherwood had 13 combined tackles on Monday. It was the third time he’s logged double-digit tackles on the season, which makes him a good weekly IDP option. Anything else he adds is just gravy.

Buffalo’s Taron Johnson had eight combined tackles, an interception and a pass defensed. It was just his second game of the season, but he showed why he’s such a good IDP option. You won’t find this kind of fantasy production out of many cornerbacks.

Buffalo’s Taylor Rapp had eight combined tackles and three passes defensed. It was the biggest tackle total for him this season, and now he’s got 21 tackles on the season, so this looks more like an outlier game than anything. Rapp is a player to add/play in deeper leagues, and one to just watch in standard setups.

Buffalo’s A.J. Epenesa had four combined tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble on Monday. He’s got 12 total tackles and three sacks on the season, so maybe this performance can get him going a bit. Don’t expect these kinds of numbers every week, but he’s one to target and possibly play in some deeper IDP setups.
