Terry McLaurin Agrees to Three-Year $71 Million Contract With The Washington Commanders
This afternoon, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Commanders’ wide receiver Terry McLaurin has agreed to sign a three-year extension with his current team worth $71 million. This new contract makes McLaurin one of the top-five highest paid WRs in the NFL for the upcoming season. He joins an elite list of the most valuable receivers in football including Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, Deandre Hopkins, and A.J. Brown. In 2022, McLaurin will be getting paid slightly more than WR Cooper Kupp, who potentially had one of the best receiving seasons in all of football.
In each of his first three seasons in Washington (2019-2021), McLaurin has produced at least 900+ receiving yards and four touchdowns. Over the last two seasons, he’s recorded at least 77 receptions and 1,000+ receiving yards in each. Since being selected with the 76th overall selection in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, McLaurin has established himself as the Commanders’ best pass-catcher. With a total of 3,090 receiving yards for 16 touchdowns in his first three seasons in Washington, McLaurin is one of the Commanders’ most valuable players and will be paid accordingly.
It will be interesting to see how Carson Wentz develops with McLaurin on offense. While McLaurin has had a terrific first three seasons in the NFL, he hasn’t had the best quarterbacks to deliver him passes. Since being drafted by the Commanders three years ago, McLaurin has been a receiver for Ryan Fitzpatrick, Taylor Heinicke, Garrett Gilbert, Kyle Allen, Dwayne Haskins (Rest in Peace), Alex Smith, Case Keenum and Colt McCoy. With Wentz throwing the football for the Commanders this season, McLaurin should be getting more consistent and accurate passes than in his first three seasons playing with a whopping nine different QBs.

This contract means that the Commanders plan on making McLaurin a major part of their offense in the years to come. Wentz’ future in Washington could truly depend on the chemistry he develops with McLaurin this upcoming season. Though Wentz also signed a multi-year deal with the commanders, only $15 million is guaranteed for this season with no guarantees for 2023 and 2024. If the pair can link up and become one of the strongest QB & WR duos in football, you can bet on Washington retaining Carson Wentz for the years to come.
Regardless, McLaurin is a player who the Commanders can count on having for at least the next few seasons. Commanders fans should be looking forward to the prospects of this offensive duo for the 2022 NFL season.
