Summary
After transferring from Oklahoma, Williams became a star at USC winning the Heisman Trophy in 2022. It appeared to be a foregone conclusion that he would be the first-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft entering the 2023 NCAA football season and that still appears to be the case. He is the heavy favorite to be the top pick of the Chicago Bears on April 26.
He has distinguished himself as an elite playmaker with rare escapability who can make something out of nothing when a play breaks down. There are some questions surrounding his maturity and mentality as a football player both on and off the field, but the general consensus among most teams and scouts is that he is the best quarterback in this draft with the most upside.
As you can see, right now the NFL player comparison listed is Kyler Murray, however, teams are hoping that he can live up to the potential of becoming closer to Patrick Mahomes. To do so he will have to become a bit more decisive and accurate on the next level.
Strengths
- Excellent mobility in the pocket to make big plays out of nothing
- Can make any throw on the field with elite arm talent
- Proven ability to supply major production and keep an otherwise subpar team competitive
- Impressive when running RPOs
- Creative in the pocket to find open receivers and find different throwing lanes and angles
- Has shown improvement as a passer each season, especially downfield
- Outstanding pocket presence
- Plays mistake-free in the red zone
- Natural athlete
Weaknesses
- Lacks ideal size for an NFL QB
- Holds the ball loose at times when on the move
- Inconsistent accuracy downfield times
- Can at times make unnecessary plays on the move instead of planting and throwing when it's an option
- Tries to make something out of nothing downfield at times when he could easily run for a first down or positive yardage
- Erratic decision-making at times and indecisiveness
- Mechanics can use some work at times
Our Take
It looks inevitable that Williams will be the top pick in this year's draft after the Bears shipped Justin Fields off to the Pittsburgh Steelers for next to nothing. We have him ranked as the QB2 in this draft behind Jayden Daniels of LSU, however, we are in the minority with that opinion.
There is no doubt that Williams has the potential to be a franchise quarterback with All-Pro upside. As long as he puts in the work and adapts to the NFL game there is no reason to believe he won't be great. The talent is track record is certainly there.
