Week 5 Fantasy Hockey Trade Value Chart: Auston Matthews A Buy-Low Candidate?

Justin Royce Nov 8th 10:23 PM EST.

We are officially five weeks into the 2021-2022 NHL season. At this point of the year, many people start to look seriously at how they can improve their roster through waivers and through trades. Many fantasy players are also looking at how they should value players on their roster who may be garnering trade interest. If you fall into this category, be sure to not only read this article but also check out the Fantasy Assistant on Fantasy SP. Not only does the Fantasy Assitant include access to the Trade Analyzer, which can show you how fair trades are, you also will have access to the Trade Value Chart, which will show you each player’s trade value. Without further ado, let’s get into this week’s top trade targets.

Buy Low

F Auston Matthews, Toronto Maple Leafs

Auston Matthews is off to a relatively slow start after missing the first three games of the year. Matthews comes into this week with five goals and three assists for eight points so far. Although his trade value saw a 4.3 point jump over the last week, he currently has a trade value of only 9.6; this is very low for a player of his caliber. You are probably asking yourself why I would have a player who jumped 4.3 points as a buy-low candidate, but Matthews had a trade value of 11.3 before the season. Matthews is coming off a year where he had 41 goals in 52 games. He is one of the best players in the world when he’s in the zone. To compare trade values, Connor McDavid, widely regarded as one of the only players better than Matthews currently has a trade value of 15.56. Getting Matthews for cheap at this point of the year could make your team a championship contender. The value Matthews brings to a team is not limited to only scoring goals, as he is also great on faceoffs and is deadly on the powerplay making him that much more valuable to your fantasy team. It may take more to get Matthews but this is still a great buy-low opportunity for one of the best players in the NHL.

Buy Low

D Dougie Hamilton, New Jersey Devils

A player who has battled injuries the majority of the year is Dougie Hamilton. Hamilton is currently dealing with an injury, but this sets up a great buy-low opportunity on a top-end defenseman. Hamilton is currently listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury but has recently returned to practice and is working with the top powerplay unit. This makes Hamilton a high ceiling offensive defenseman. If your team is deep at forward, consider moving one of them for Hamilton.

Buy Low

F Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars

Tyler Seguin was a player who dropped in the draft due to missing all lof ast year after having surgery on his hip. Although he is off to a solid start, he still seems to be lacking the proper trade value, which is currently only 6.08. This is very low for a player like Seguin who can fill up the stat sheet in many ways. Through 16 games this year, Seguin currently has five goals and seven assists. Consider making a move for Seguin if you are looking for a solid stat filler. Seguin is the go-to player on a Stars team that has a solid top line of Alexander Radulov and Jamie Benn. I expect Seguin to continue having a great year. Go get him while he is still cheap.

Sell High

F Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks

A player who is in a tricky situation right now is Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane. Kane is currently on an awful Chicago team that has found themselves in trouble on and off the ice this year. Through all of this, Kane has still found a way to be productive this year. After putting up 17 points through the first 14 games of the year, Kane saw a 4.2-point jump in his trade value. Currently, Kane has an 11.38 estimated trade value, which puts him in the top 10 players according to the Trade Value Chart. At this point, it is worth considering selling high on the Chicago forward, and considering how poor the Blackhawks have been playing, Kane can net you a few serviceable players in return or you could try and move him for a star.

Sell High

F William Nylander, Toronto Maple Leafs

The second Maple Leaf making an appearance on this list is winger William Nylander. Nylander has been off to a scorching start to the season by his standards. Nylander has seen a 3.1-point jump in value since last week, giving him a current value of 10.89, making this a classic sell-high scenario. Nylander has settled in nicely on the Maple Leafs' top line with Auston Matthews, as he currently has five goals and seven assists through the first 15 games of the year. When looking to possibly trade Nylander, try and use this to your advantage. Look for the player in your league that has Matthews and try to see if you can maybe get more than Nylander is worth by using the possible stack of Matthews and Nylander to your advantage.

Sell High

D Alex Pietrangelo, Las Vegas Golden Knights

The defenseman who saw the biggest jump in the last week was Golden Knights defender Alex Pietrangelo. Pietrangelo was up over three points in trade value this week giving him a current value of 8.85. This is currently the high watermark for Pietrangelo this season in trade value. There are multiple big defenseman names who you could target in exchange for Pietrangelo. Check out the chart below to see players with similar value who may be worth targeting in a trade. If your team is deep defensively, you could also look at trading for a forward of similar value.
