Game News
And now Justin Herbert has returned to the game.
@AdamSchefter: Chargers QB Justin Herbert to the blue tent.
J.K. Dobbins 44 YARD TOUCHDOWN!
@NFL_DovKleiman: QUENTIN JOHNSTON'S SECOND TOUCHDOWN!
https://t.co/xAq6vtD6ak https://t.co/ae1aZH7IOn
Surprising but true: Gus Edwards has more carries than J.K. Dobbins in both games this season. Dobbins has 266 yards on 27 carries (9.9 YPC), whereas Edwards has 85 yards on 29 carries (2.9)
Josh Harris doing a presser pre-game about the team's stadium naming rights deal with Northwest Federal Credit Union. The Commanders did receive multiple offers, @MarkMaske and I were told, including one that would carry over to their next stadium. They chose Northwest believing that they'd get better value by signing another deal in eight years.
The Elijah Molden trade is already paying dividends.
Los Angeles traded a 2026 7th rounder to Tennessee for Molden after roster cuts, adding a third safety with starting experience to the Chargers roster. With Alohi Gilman out with injury on Sunday, Molden stepped into a starting role next to Derwin James.
In the second quarter with the Chargers leading 13-0, Panthers quarterback Bryce Young dropped back to pass and tried to fit a pass over the middle to Diontae Johnson in double coverage. Linebacker Junior Colson dove to tip the pass but missed, but Young’s throw overshot Johnson and came directly to Molden, who crashed on the route and tumbled over Colson to give the Chargers the ball just behind midfield
Quentin Johnston has his first touchdown of the season.
On second down, Justin Herbert spun out of a sack and made an acrobatic throw towards tight end Eric Tomlinson. The ball made it into Tomlinson’s hands before being knocked out and was initially ruled a catch and fumble, recovered by Carolina. After review, the play was ruled an incompletion, giving the Chargers a third and 10.
Herbert took a shot play to Johnston in one-on-one coverage with Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn on a sideline go ball. Johnston reached down to catch the ball coming low to the inside, scoring from 29 yards out to open the scoring on Sunday
Los Angeles is 2-0 for the first time since 2012 after defeating the Panthers 26-3 in a dominant effort. The Chargers ran for 219 yards and Quentin Johnston led the team in receiving. Elijah Molden added an interception of Bryce Young as the Chargers held Carolina to 84 yards passing
JK Dobbins with a 44-yard TD. His return from injury has been awesome to watch. Good for JK, man.
@MySportsUpdate: Quentin Johnston proving doubters wrong. Big TD grab over Jaycee Horn.

Bryce Young....Awful.
@NFL_DovKleiman: Jaycee Horn with the INT!

RT: Adam Thielen postgame on the Panthers offense: "I love Bryce to death, man. He works his butt off. He's a great player. This is not a Bryce Young issue. This is an offensive team issue. We are all in this together. I know what football is, that's why I love this game with everything I have, because it is the greatest team game. It's not about an individual." #NFL | #Panthers
White jerseys, white britches today, as modeled by JJ Jansen. Jansen will break the franchise record by appearing in his 245th game today, breaking the old record of 244 previously held by JJ Jansen. pic.x.com/geczqoldcq
The #Giants defense didn't allow a touchdown and their offense scored three ... They still lost. If they can't pull this one out I'm not sure when they're getting one before the #Panthers in Germany -- and even that's a question if Andy Dalton is at QB
Panthers collect a Herbert fumble, with Josey Jewell getting on the loose ball.
Eddy Pineiro gets them on the board with a 38-yard field goal.
Interesting...
@josephperson: Panthers WR Diontae Johnson on whether he's surprised by the lack of downfield throws: "We all are. But it is what it is. We're not the ones calling the plays. So our job is to go out there and execute every play that they call, and put it on film."
Is the Quentin Johnston breakout game here?
Johnston beat Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn one-on-one for a 29-yard touchdown down the sideline in the first quarter to score the first Chargers points of the game. In the second quarter, with Los Angeles grinding Carolina’s defense down on the ground during an 11-play, 65-yard drive, Johnston found himself wide open in the end zone for a second touchdown.
The Panthers sent Horn on a blitz on third and goal from the 5-yard line as Johnston crossed the formation left to right on a route. Carolina linebacker Josey Jewell did not carry Johnston’s route across while linebacker Shaq Thompson crashed on the flat, leaving Johnston wide open in the end zone to score again
J.K. Dobbins refused to be caught this time around.
After the Chargers took over near midfield off of an Elijah Molden interception of Bryce Young, Los Angeles gave Dobbins the ball on a 3rd and 1. Justin Herbert had previously completed an 8-yard pass to Josh Palmer, his first catch of the game, and handed to Gus Edwards for 1 yard.
Dobbins took the handoff left and broke through the line thanks to a block on the outside by Edwards, as the Chargers had both running backs on the field. With nobody near him, Dobbins burst down the sideline before juking Panthers safety Xavier Woods, staying in bounds as he continued towards the end zone
The questionables are questionable no more.
Friday’s injury report ahead of the Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers featured five players the Carolina Panthers deemed as questionable. But, as expected, all five will be in uniform this afternoon.
Included in the bunch is starting tight end Tommy Tremble, who is on track to make his 2024 debut today. Rookie and fourth-round pick Ja’Tavion Sanders got the start in last week’s regular-season opener in place of Tremble, who has been dealing with hamstring and back issues
