Ryan Helsley Struggles in Return from IL; Fantasy Managers Should Exercise Caution This Week

Since returning from the injured list due to elbow inflammation, Ryan Helsley has struggled to find his footing, posting a bloated 30.00 ERA and 5.00 WHIP over his first two appearances. He suffered a heartbreaking blown save against the Dodgers on June 20 following a defensive misplay. His fourth-place Orioles (37-42) need him to stabilize the late innings, but he is currently shaking off significant rust as he works his way back into a steady high-leverage role.

Despite his brutal recent outings, our season projections remain optimistic, calling for 28 saves and a 3.52 ERA over 64.0 innings. This is a pitcher who locked down 48 saves with a 2.10 ERA as recently as 2024. While his current 5.53 ERA on the year is alarming, his 13.42 K/9 indicates his raw stuff remains elite, making his recent blowups look like a post-injury fluke rather than a permanent decline.

The Orioles embark on a six-game slate this week, starting with three games against the Angels followed by three home matchups against the Nationals. While these opponents are beatable, our models project a difficult week ahead for Helsley with a projected 9.08 ERA as he refines his control. Fantasy managers should play it safe and sit him until he proves his elbow is completely sound and his command returns.
