Waiver Wire Options
Orlando Magic young guard Anthony Black had a slow start to the season, but has seemed to pick up some serious steam in his last two games. In his first eight games, he only had 54 total points, but in his previous two, he scored 37 points.
He also is playmaking at a high level in his previous two games, racking up at least eight assists in both games. With Paolo Banchero out, the Magic are searching for someone else to have a punch of offensive juice other than Franz Wagner. It seems as if Black may be that guy.
Right now, Black is only owned in 27% of leagues, so he should be on waivers, especially with his slow start. But you should get him now and ride his hot hand until it seems to fizzle out. The Magic selected him with hopes that he could be a big guard with wing-like versatility, so the fact that he is finally tapping into that potential should not be overlooked.
Charlotte Hornets wing Grant Williams has quietly been a huge part of the Hornets being a competent team this year. He essentially does all the dirty work for them on both ends while also spreading the floor and being a reliable shooter for his young guards.
With the Hornets missing their top two centers, he has also assumed the center position in certain small ball lineups. He is averaging 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists on 44% shooting this year.
I see Williams' production hovering around this level for most of the year, so you don’t have to worry about him possibly losing minutes or shots. Williams is owned in 51%, which could be a problem for you in your league, but if he is available, he should be an automatic pickup for your team. He will be a solid contributor who won't have you struggling to decide whether to start or sit him.
Los Angeles Clippers forward Amir Coffey has essentially marked his stamp as a rotational piece for them. The Clippers have been very indecisive on who to start at the small forward position with Kawhi Leonard out. It has been a revolving door because many guys on this team are deficient on one end of the floor.
Coffey, though, has been a steady contributor, scoring 33 total points in his previous two games. He has been described as a defensive wing for much of his career, so if he can muster up any consistent offense, he will be a focal point of this Clippers team this year.
Coffey is only owned in 6% of leagues, and I don’t see that number getting any higher based on his reputation and the team that he is on. But I think he is an amazing option as a deep-league sleeper pick. The last two games of his aren't just some breakout performances or something. Coffey hit the double-digit scoring mark five times, including a 20-point game earlier this season. He has shown that no matter what his role is, he will go out and produce for this Clippers team.
Charlotte Hornets guard Tre Mann is an absolute spark plug off the bench. He brings an element of explosiveness no Hornets guard has. He has been an efficient scorer off the Hornets' bench. He has been so good that head coach Charles Lee benched LaMelo Ball in favor of Mann in his latest game.
Mann is averaging a career-high 14.8 points, 3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 24 minutes of action. He is only owned in 37% of leagues, and honestly, it’s kind of laughable. A guy who is as consistent as him should be picked up at a much higher rate. He is a no-brainer option on the waiver wire; if you have a chance to get him, he should be your priority over anyone else.
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Isaiah Joe is an excellent deep-league sleeper pick. He is one of the top shooters in the league and is on an offense that heightens his strengths and allows him to play the exact way he wants to. Though his production has declined a bit, he still is very capable of producing. He had a five-game stretch to start the season where he scored in double digits for all of them.
With OKC missing centers, his defensive responsibilities have amped up, but the return of Isaiah Hartenstein is going to help shore that up. He is only owned in 5% of leagues, so he will be pretty much available the whole year. A sharpshooter like Joe is always a great option at the end of your bench.
