Linebackers

Henry To'oto'o, Houston Texans

With starting every-down linebacker Christian Harris being sent to injured reserve to start the season, To'oto'o is expect to slide into his role and be out on the field for nearly every down. Because he was billed as a backup all summer, you can probably find him on your waiver wire in most leagues.

The Texans have two linebackers on the field at just about all times and this role in this system has proven to provide plenty of fantasy value. He is an especially strong pickup if you own Harris and had to place him in your IR slot. To'oto'o should be a nice plug in until Harris returns around Week 5.

De'Vondre Campbell Sr., San Francisco 49ers

Campbell is a similar situation to To'oto'o except Campbell has proven to be a valuable IDP contributor in the past for many years. However, this season he will eventually see a more limited role than he has in the past. With that said, those snap limits will not come until Dre Greenlaw returns off injured reserve later in the season.

This is another role that has proven to have a ton of fantasy value. 49ers defensive coordinator has come out and stated that Campbell will be the guy next to Fred Warner in nickel packages until Greenlaw is ready to return to the field. He also opens up a great opportunity for you to throw Greenlaw in your IR slot and roll with Campbell until he regains his starting job.

Christian Rozeboom, Los Angeles Rams

We are going with Rozeboom here, but Troy Reeder also has a shot to be the guy you want to start in LA so understand there is some risk here. The Rams trading Ernest Jones IV to the Tennessee Titans out of nowhere has opened up a massive void in the defense which will be a huge opportunity for whoever seizes it.

Jones piled up 145 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2023 and those are all up for grabs. IDP owners are now scrambling to figure out who will be the main beneficiary of his absence. You should at the very least stash one of these guys on your bench because someone here has a shot to be a league winner. Rozeboom and Reeder are the favorites to step up while Omar Speights and Jacob Hummel are dark horses. Speights could see more value later in the season as the young linebacker develops.

Defensive Backs

P.J. Locke, Denver Broncos

Locke went on an awesome run late in 2023 but has flown under the radar this summer. He is still the starter in Denver so it's surprising that he's being almost completely overlooked. In a six-game window from November 26 through New Years Eve, which was the fantasy championships, he amassed 41 tackles, three sacks, four pass defenses and two forced fumbles. That is massive production and he is a great option who is almost definitely on waivers in your league right now.

Brandon Jones, Denver Broncos

Right next to Locke is Jones. He is now almost two full years removed from is torn ACL and will be starting opposite Locke in Denver. During his time with the Miami Dolphins, he was one of the best pass-rushing safeties in the NFL. In 2021, he managed to take down the quarterback five times while in a rotational role. Jones has also proven to be a strong tackler and a playmaker. Now healthy and in an every-down role, he should be a great IDP option this year.

Marcus Williams, Baltimore Ravens

Williams is a boom-or-bust option. Injuries have been an issue for him since joining the Ravens in 2022 and his tackle numbers have been up and down. However, he has proven to be an impressive playmaker. It seems like whenever there is a big play being made he's right in the middle of it. Kyle Hamilton and Roquan Smith rightfully get most of the attention on this defense, but Williams is more than capable of giving you a monster week while also having decent tackle numbers most of the time.

Damar Hamlin, Buffalo Bills

Yup, that Damar Hamlin. With so much focus on his "injury" in 2022, people neglect the fact that he had 91 tackles and 1.5 sacks when it happened. He has now won the starting job in Buffalo and will be a key piece in that defense which lost so many big-name players in the secondary, including safeties Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde. Big plays haven't proven to be a part of his skill set yet, but he could end up being a 100-tackle safety this season.

Defensive Line

Chop Robinson, Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins' defensive line was crushed with injuries last season and also took a hit in free agency. Bradley Chubb tore his ACL, Jaelan Phillips blew out his Achilles, and both Andrew Van Ginkel and Christian Watson signed elsewhere this offseason. Phillips is expect to be active but eased into action while Chubb has been placed on injured reserve and will miss at least four games.

Miami drafted Robinson in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft to fill the void and the reports for him have been glowing to say the least. Look for him to be the primary pass rusher on this defense to start the season and see all the snaps he can handle in pass rushing situations.

Andrew Van Ginkel, Minnesota Vikings

Speaking of Van Ginkel, he's been a vastly underrated player by IDP owners and should have a huge role in Minnesota after getting paid this offseason. They brought in him and Jonathan Greenard to be their top pass rushers and Greenard has garnered most of the attention. Don't be shocked if Van Ginkel outshines him this season. The only issue here is that he may be listed as a LB in some leagues, but generally he's DE eligible on most platforms.
