Why Tyreek Hill, Deebo Samuel Sr. and Marvin Harrison Jr. Disappointed this Fantasy Football Season
Now that the fantasy football season is over, it's time to look back and evaluate the season that just was. I went back and watched film of some of the biggest wide receiver disappointments of 2024 to try to figure out what went wrong and if you should still be targeting them in 2025.
Tyreek Hill, Miami Dolphins
The one obvious issue was his quarterback Tua Tagovailoa missing six games this season. However, this wasn't a Hill-specific issue. The entire offense fell apart without Tua under center leaving all of the fantasy options in Miami mostly abysmal and at best unpredictable.
With that said, there is much more to say about that and it doesn't help us at all as we look ahead to next season. So we will focus on the games Tua did play in.
We want to start by saying that Hill was reportedly dealing with a wrist injury all season, which could have impacted his performance. His drops went way up this season. I don't believe that was a major factor is his massive dropoff in production from last season though.
When it comes to Hill aging, he still looks faster than anybody on the field. He's still making defensive backs look silly on a ton of routes, so other than his issue with drops, he still looks like a WR1 talent on film.
There were two big issues that led to his downfall this season, the first being that defenses have figured out how to scheme against this offense. They running a two-high shell defense and taking away the deep ball. Defenses are taking their chances with De'Von Achane and Jonnu Smith instead of giving up the huge plays we've grown accustomed to with this offense.
The other massive issue in Miami is the terrible offensive line play, especially at the guard positions. The team was already trying to protect their quarterback due to his injury history and the line was not doing its part. This led to the ball getting out super quick on dump-offs because there simply wasn't time for the big plays to even develop. These issues stripped the Miami offense of their big-play ability in a major way all season.
Heading into 2025, odds are Hill will drop and end up being a steal in drafts based on what I saw on film. The question now is where will he be playing?
Reports are that all is now well in Miami after his postgame outburst following the team's Week 18 loss, but I'm not buying that just yet. I expect him to be on another team by the end of the 2025 NFL Draft and that will of course change everything as far as his situation goes, whether it's for better or for worse.
If you are in a dynasty, you should roll the dice and buy Hill low before he lands somewhere else and the hype begins. This is a player will high-end WR1 upside who you can acquire super cheap right now. It's well worth the risk for a team who views themselves as serious contenders heading into next season.
Deebo Samuel Sr., San Francisco 49ers
Samuel is a very different case from Hill. He just looks like a guy who lost a step. He turns 29 years old this week and his film this season is alarming, to say the least.
Throughout his career, he always relied on physicality, athleticism, and toughness to be the dominant player that he's been. Speed was never a key piece of his game, but when you're already not that fast and lose a step, it's noticeable.
When you watch him, he looked slow and unable to separate consistently. His style of play has also led to a lot of injuries and surely has put a lot more wear and tear on his body than your average wideout.
This is another player that I'm expecting to find a new home this offseason. However, that is not a good thing for him to leave that offensive system that has utilized him so creatively. Unless something drastic changes, you should be avoiding him in 2025.
Marvin Harrison Jr., Arizona Cardinals
Harrison was by far the most interesting of the three when watching his film and realizing why he fell short of expectations this year. We can dig into Kyler Murray's inconsistencies and his unwillingness to load the rookie up with targets, but that is what it is and what it's going to be next year as well.
Murray has always been inconsistent and it's something Harrison will have to deal with for at least one more year. However, Murray is also a solid QB who is more than capable of sustaining a fantasy WR1, so this isn't too concerning.
The thing that jumps out on film is his lack of maturity, both physically and mentally. It feels like watching a guy who has been the best player on his team his life and everyone told him how special Marvin Harrison's son is. There are a lot of plays that he didn't take advantage of because of either laziness or lack of attention to detail.
Some were simple rookie growing pains, a lot of the issues can be fixed by him simply putting the work in and always giving 100%. He's gifted enough that he's going to be a very good player no matter what, but he needs to look in the mirror and put the work in if he is going to be great.
I'm right back in on Harrison for 2025. The talent is too great and I have faith that he'll do what he needs to do and come much closer to meeting his full potential next season.
