I compared goalies to catchers in baseball yesterday, and there are also parallels to pitchers. The goalie is the only person on his team doing his specific job when on the ice, just like a pitcher on the mound; everyone else on the baseball field is playing defense, but the pitcher is pitching.

They also need to have a short memory. A closing pitcher might blow a save one day but must come out and slam the door shut the next day. It’s the same thing for a goalie: you might give up six goals on Wednesday, but that game is over, and it’s a clean slate when you take the ice on Friday.

Let’s run through Saturday’s fantasy hockey goalie matchup rankings by the measure of opponents’ shot attempt and goal per game averages. Those rankings were compared to give each team a matchup score: a positive number means the team takes more shots and scores less goals, giving more quality save opportunities.

I listed every goalie who has played for each team, so check starting lineups before game time to be sure you have the right guy in your lineup. Stats are from NHL.com.
