Week 9 Fantasy Football QB and TE Droppables: Should you drop Brock Purdy, Geno Smith, and Kyle Pitts?
We're always looking to make moves in fantasy football, and this is going to be a weekly spot where we look at some of the most widely-dropped players across fantasy leagues and decide whether you should (or shouldn’t) cut bait with them – due to either underperformance, injury, or otherwise.
We covered waiver adds already, but in order to pick up someone, you have to drop someone. And that isn’t a decision you should take lightly. We’ve all made drops we’ve come to regret.
Let’s take a look at some of the most dropped quarterbacks and tight ends for Week 9 and decide if they’re actually drop-worthy.

Week 9 Fantasy Football Droppables
Brock Purdy, QB, San Francisco 49ers
Purdy is QB10 on the year so why are we talking about dropping him? Well, he's fallen off a bit over the past three weeks and has thrown three touchdowns and five interceptions during that time span. Are the wheels starting to fall off? Maybe, but he also threw for 365 yards against the Bengals on Sunday and continues to have one of the best supporting casts in the league around him. Purdy should get Deebo Samuel back after the bye and then gets to play Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, and Seattle so the schedule softens up a bit. While he's tempting to drop, I think Purdy needs to be a hold for now.
Verdict: Hold
Geno Smith, QB, Seattle Seahawks
Smith hasn't been awful this season, but he hasn't exactly been all that useful for fantasy purposes either. He currently sits at QB23 on the year (though it's worth noting he's had a bye week) and is only averaging 13.6 fantasy points per game. Outside of a strong Week 2, Smith has been a middling fantasy quarterback and hasn't topped 14 fantasy points in a game since Week 3. His schedule doesn't get a whole lot easier with matchups against Baltimore, San Francisco (x2), Philadelphia, and Dallas as five of his next seven games. As long as you have another decent option at quarterback, you can feel free to move on from Geno at this point.
Verdict: Drop
Joshua Dobbs, QB, Arizona Cardinals
UPDATE: Dobbs has been traded to the Vikings and could slot in as their rest-of-season starter. He has been updated to be a HOLD and you can skip down to the next player.
The dream is dead, my friends. Dobbs was supposed to have another week or so before Kyler Murray returned, but the latest news has Clayton Tune starting for the Cardinals this week. While Dobbs had some useful weeks earlier in the season (and has actually outscored Trevor Lawrence and Dak Prescott through nine weeks!), he isn't worth keeping on your fantasy roster as he looks to be close to being the Cardinals' third-string quarterback.
Verdict: HOLD
Kyle Pitts, TE, Atlanta Falcons
While we all wanted Pitts to be a top-5 tight end, he currently sits at TE12 on the year. And that's honestly a bit surprising considering he's only put up double-digit PPR fantasy points in two out of eight weeks. The third-year player has registered more than 50 receiving yards just once all season and has only found the end zone the same number of times. His production has him close to a drop, but he's still seeing targets as he's seen at least five in all but two games all season. Pitts isn't going to be the league-winner his fantasy owners were hoping for when they drafted him, but he's still worth rostering for the time being.
Verdict: Hold
Tyler Higbee, TE, Los Angeles Rams
Higbee had a moment in time where he looked like he was about to become a weekly starter at the tight end positiong, but then Cooper Kupp came back from the IR and pushed Higbee closer to fantasy irrelevance. The veteran is currently TE20 on the year and only has 10 catches over his last four games. While he's coming off his best performance it weeks, his best performance in weeks was only five catches for 45 yards so we're not exactly talking about a fantasy explosion here. Higbee can be useful in deeper leagues, but you can move on from him otherwise.
Verdict: Drop
Luke Musgrave, TE, Green Bay Packers
I really want Musgrave to be a thing, but that might have to wait until 2024. While the rookie has had some promising moments this season, he's still yet to find the end zone and hasn't topped 50 receiving yards in a game all season. Worse, his usage has fallen off over the past two weeks as he's only seen eight total targets during that time span. While Musgrave should be a promising dynasty asset, he can be dropped in most leagues.
Verdict: Drop
