2023 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pickup: Brett Baty Heating Up

Ismail Albiz May 2nd 7:30 PM EDT.

This past off-season, the New York Mets went on a spending spree as they loaded up on talent by bringing in players who's respectable contracts totaled nearly half a billion dollars. A season removed from 101 win season, the Mets made valuable roster moves defensively, offensively, and in regards to pitching. The Mets were able to sign a reigning three-time Cy Young winner and were able to retain their top talent.

Consequently, after a month into the season, it is safe to say that all the roster moves are paying off. The Mets find themselves tied for second in the NL East and they are averaging 4.52 runs per game. So far in this young season, Their .240 batting average is 20th in the league. Their .332 on-base percentage is 10th, while their .384 slugging percentage is 14th. On the other hand, the pitching staff is doing their job by holding opposing hitters in check. They are giving up 4 runs per game and opponents have a .239 batting average against their pitchers. While the household names on the Mets are contributing regularly for the Mets early and often, they have also been getting a healthy contribution from a recent call-up in the form of Brett Baty.

The 23-year-old rookie who was called up midway through the first month of the season, has been stellar for the New York Mets. The left-handed slugging third baseman was drafted 12th overall in 2019 and has been solidifying elements to his game in the Mets system. Shortly after getting drafted and signing his entry-level contract, he split time between the Gulf Coast Mets, Kingsport Mets, and the Brooklyn Cyclones. Over 51 games, he hit 7 home runs and 33 RBIs. With Baty continuing his hot streak, and injuries plaguing the New York Mets infield he was called up to the Mets last August. Baty had a spectacular debut as he became only the fifth New York Met to hit a home run in his first major league at-bat. He began this season, in triple-A, but ever since his call up he has not looked back and has cemented his place as the Mets’ third baseman by hitting .333 and is owned at an alarming rate of 45% in fantasy.

Baty has been establishing himself very quickly in the majors due to his strong work ethic. For instance, he was able to work on his swing and combine it with swinging for power by adjusting his mechanics. The 23-year-old is flashing signs of supreme power by timing his swings and has shown opposite field power as well. Also, he has shown over several different instances that he is sound defensive as well. Expect Brett Batty to become a cornerstone of the Mets franchise, and become a prominent player in the offense as he adjusts his hitting even more. One thing is for certain, and that is the fact the Mets have a promising third baseman on their roster, with a very bright future!
