Fantasy Baseball Week 7 Waiver Wire Pickups: Christopher Morel, Eury Perez Lead The Way!

Ismail Albiz May 15th 10:05 AM EDT.

As the 2023 MLB season enters its seventh week, fantasy baseball owners are getting comfortable scouting the waiver wire for the best waiver wire pickups to enhance their squads. In a long season, it is crucial to get into the swing of things early and make it a habit of constantly improving one’s team. In this article, we will take a look at the top fantasy baseball pickups heading into Week 7 of the 2023 season.

Week 7 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pickups

2B/OF Christopher Morel, Chicago Cubs, 56% Owned

The Chicago Cubs organization appears to be doing a great job of developing their prospects. Just a few weeks after promoting Matt Mervis, the Cubs have promoted their versatile prospect, Morel, to the big leagues. Morel gives the Cubs a nice combination of power/speed contribution. He clearly put his power and speed on display early and often as he was sent down to the minors to start the season. In 115 at-bats in the minors, he had an average of .330 with 11 home runs, 31 RBI, and 4 stolen bases. As he has improved his swing, reducing the number of strikeouts, makes him a viable threat if he can get on base, his sprint speed is one of the fastest in the league. More importantly, he can provide versatility on defense as he can play second base and the outfield. Finally, the injury to Nico Hoerner means that he will get more playing time, and possibly hit from the leadoff position as well.

SP Eury Perez, Miami Marlins, 58% Owned

Eury Perez made his debut for the Marlins on Friday night, going 4.2 innings, and ended up with a  a no-decision in a loss to the Reds. While he had a decent outing, his only blemishes were giving up two earned runs on four hits, including two homers, and two walks. Perez, a 20-year-old right-hander, earned his promotion from Double-A Pensacola after posting a 2.32 ERA over just six starts. He has solid command of the strike zone and throws a powerful fastball. Other than his fastball, he keeps hitter off balance by mixing in a slider and a curveball. While the Marlins have a weak schedule for the next while that features the Royals and Athletics, expect Perez to deliver a better outing in his next start.

SP Bailey Ober, Minnesota Twins, 56% Owned

The Twins are currently experiencing injuries to their starting rotation. The team has lost Kenta Maeda and Tyler Mahle to injuries. Ober has taken the mound with plenty of confidence as he has recorded consecutive starts of 5.2 innings while giving up just one run in each game. Ober’s pitch rotation relies heavily on his four-seam fastball and occasionally switches things up with a changeup. He’s also induced more weak contact recently courtesy of throwing his slider more often to right-handed batters. His ERA is currently at 1.59 but he will have to handle his secondary pitches well to complement his fastball against some of the better teams he is scheduled to pitch against.

SP J.P France, Houston Astros, 35% Owned

The right-hander has been quite dominant early this season since being promoted from the AAA affiliate in Sugar Land for the past two seasons. There, he had a 2-1 record with a 2.33 ERA. He has punched out 26 batters in only 19.1 innings of work. So far this season since being promoted, he has just allowed one run on six hits across 11.2 innings through two starts. His success is because he has great command of the strike zone and he is able to effectively combine his various arsenal of pitches as he mixes a fastball with a curveball and slider. With a number of injuries to the Astros Rotation look for him to get a number of starts.
