Fantasy baseball can feel like the most difficult fantasy sport pretty often. Blowup games from star pitchers and injuries to big-time hitters can frustrate fantasy owners.

Dynasty leagues can be even more of a challenge. Not only do fantasy owners need to worry about their big league talent, but they also need to be aware of how their future fantasy players are faring in the minor leagues.

With that in mind, I thought it would be a good time to take a look at some of the top-100 prospects who are currently in AAA and update their seasons.

There’s 28 top-100 prospects currently in Triple-A, so we’ll break things down into a couple stories at least. Today, we’ll just focus on top-10 prospects. Check back in the coming days for the other parts to this story.

Top-10 Prospects

There’s six top-10 prospects currently playing in Triple-A. Those players are: Baltimore Orioles’ Jackson Holliday, Tampa Bay Rays’ Junior Caminero, Washington Nationals’ James Wood and Dylan Crews, Arizona Diamondbacks’ Jordan Lawlar and Chicago White Sox’s Colson Montgomery.

Holliday recently hit the injured list with elbow inflammation. It was just another negative to what’s been a disappointing season for the game’s top prospect.

Holliday was tearing up Triple-A early in the season, which prompted the team to call him up in April. He lasted just a couple weeks in the big leagues before being returned to AAA with a .059 average (two hits in 34 at-bats).

It’s far too early to give up on Holliday, but dynasty owners that roster him sure have to be sweating right now. Hopefully a little break on the IL will help Holliday get back on track, and maybe he can still make a difference at the big league level at some point this season.

Caminero is also injured, and hasn’t played since late May. He’s dealing with a quad injury.

I thought there was a chance Caminero could make the big league team out of spring training after getting seven games and 34 at-bats in the big leagues during the 2023 season. That didn’t happen, and Caminero has only gotten 34 Triple-A games in this season, so the final minor league seasoning he needed has been postponed.

He’s now looking like a late season call-up, possibly not until September depending on how the Rays are playing and what they decide to do at the trade deadline.

Wood just returned to the minor league field on Tuesday after missing a few weeks with a left hamstring strain.

In his 46 Triple-A games so far this season, Wood has a .351 average and .463 on-base percentage, suggesting that a call-up to the big leagues might not be far off. The Nats could be sellers at the deadline, and if they are, Wood should be up in the MLB shortly after the deadline (if he isn’t called up before then).

Crews just got called up to Triple-A, playing in his first game on Tuesday.

He hit .274 and got on base at a .343 clip at Double-A across 51 games this season. Crews hit .292 across three minor league levels a season ago, so the organization is certainly not afraid to move him up the ranks quickly.

There’s a pretty good chance we see Crews in the MLB at some point this season still. It would probably help if the Nationals decided to sell at the deadline, but Crews could also hit well enough in AAA to force a call up.

Shocker here: Lawler was just placed on the injured list with a hamstring strain.

The 21-year-old has only played in 11 minor leagues games this season, and only four of them have come in AAA. He did get some Triple-A action in 2023 as well, but he likely still needs a decent amount of seasoning before being ready for a call up.

Lawler hit .358 in 16 Triple-A games in 2023, and is hitting .400 in four AAA games this season. If he could simply stay healthy, he might already be in the big leagues.

The Diamondbacks are a team with a lot of veterans, so I’d expect them to buy at the deadline, instead of sell. That could hurt Lawler’s chances of being called up, but the real thing holding him back is staying healthy and getting Triple-A action in.

Montgomery has played in 62 Triple-A games this season, but is sporting just a .217 average.

Montgomery has a better .327 on-base percentage and has 20 extra-base hits among his 51 total knocks, but the low average is a bit of a concern. The 22-year-old also has 80 strikeouts this season.

The White Sox are certainly going to be sellers at the trade deadline, and that’s when I’d expect Montgomery to be called up to the big leagues. Of course, I’m sure the team would prefer to see his average go up in the minor leagues, but they could allow him to work through his struggles with the big league team, and it might do wonders for him moving forward.

He’s hit at least .274 in every other minor league season, so I’m not too worried that a younger hitter is struggling at Triple-A. It should only be a matter of time before we see Montgomery in the big leagues.
