Gil’s Season/Career Stats
During this season, Gil has made 15 starts. He’s 9-2 with a 2.77 earned run average. He’s struck out 97 batters over 81 1/3 innings.
Gil has allowed no earned runs in five starts and one run in five other starts. He allowed two runs in one start, three runs in two starts and five runs in another start. Gil’s ERA would be much lower if not for the seven runs he allowed in his most recent start.
Gil has pretty much been dominant all season, with only a couple blow-up starts, and mostly elite starts otherwise. He does struggle with walks, but his strikeout numbers allow him to keep the runs to a minimum, and he’s been able to work fairly deep into games most starts.
This is just the third MLB season for Gil. He started six games for the Yankees in 2021 before making just one start in 2022. Gil missed the entire 2023 season.
Gil’s Fantasy Outlook
Gil’s walk numbers should definitely be a concern for fantasy baseball owners, but at the same time, he’s got high strikeout numbers, a low ERA and has a good chance to win every time he takes the mound because of the team he’s on.
Gil doesn’t really have any kind of history to go off of, so it’s hard to say if this is sustainable for him.
Some might say his high walk numbers will eventually catch up to him, but I don’t necessarily think that’s the case. Gil still has a solid 1.08 WHIP number even with all the walks, so it’s not like he’s giving up a bunch of hits on top of the walks.
The biggest concern for me is whether or not he can make it through the grind of an MLB regular season. He hasn’t gone over 100 innings in a single season dating back to 2018.
Gil is approaching 100 innings already, and with 11 earned runs allowed over his past 12 innings, many are wondering if he’s starting to break down.
I think the three-start sample size is too short of a timeframe to judge hum on. If his struggles continue for another start or two, then I’d be more concerned, but his trade value might also be ruined by that point, so what exactly should a fantasy owner do?
Gil’s Trade Options
If you were wise enough to draft Gil this season, or scooped him up off the waiver wire early in the season, your fantasy team has certainly gotten a big boost from him.
It’s hard to give up a pitcher who is throwing as well as Gil, but at the same time, fantasy owners didn’t spend a high draft pick on him, so any trade you make will be a good return on investment.
I’m torn on what to do with Gil, so I think the best way to approach things is on a team-by-team basis.
If your fantasy team has a good pitching core and can still succeed without Gil, then I’d at least throw Gil’s name on the trade block. If your team is really lacking in the pitching department, you’d probably be better off keeping Gil, although I’d still at least make him available in trades to see if maybe you can deal him for a couple depth pieces.
Gil’s blowup start and so-so numbers of late might also make Gil a little more easily attainable in a trade, so if your fantasy team is in need of some pitching, now is a pretty solid time to go after him.
In terms of what Gil might land you in a trade, he’s still ranked 43rd on the FantasySP Fantasy Baseball Trade Value Chart. A pitcher-desperate fantasy team might trade a player ranked above him, but I think the best course of action with Gil is to try to attain some depth pieces.
If you need pitching, Gil could at least land you a couple streaming options, and probably above-average ones at that. If you need hitting, Gil should get you at least one starting option, and maybe even two if a fantasy owner is desperate enough.
While I tend to want to sell high with Gil, I also don’t think now is the best time to make the deal either. Really the best time was a few starts ago. I’d prefer to wait for Gil to turn in another quality outing before trading him, as his value would go back up again and you’d get a better return most likely.
Again though, trading or acquiring Gil really comes down to each individual fantasy team. Assess your team and make the best decision you think you can.
Of course, be sure to run your trade proposals through the trade analyzer before hitting accept. Happy trading!
