One Fantasy Baseball Breakout Player from Every National League Team: Tommy Edman, Garrett Mitchell, Ivan Herrera, Nick Gonzales, James Wood and More
Morgan identifies a breakout fantasy player from every NL team for the 2025 season.
At the end of last week, I put together a story on breakout fantasy baseball players and chose one from every American League team. Today, I'm back with the National League version of that story.
Let's get right to it!

Dodgers
I'm going to take Tommy Edman from a stacked Dodgers' team. He was great for LA in the latter portion of the 2024 season and I think Edman will put up big numbers despite hitting near the bottom of the order in 2025.
Phillies
You might not consider Trea Turner a breakout candidate, but I think he's going to thrive while hitting atop the Phillies' lineup, so he's my pick. If he can stay healthy, Turner could deliver some of the best fantasy results in his career.
Brewers
Garrett Mitchell is my pick from the Brewers. Injuries have slowed his career, but he's healthy now and expected to hit in the heart of the team's lineup. If he can play close to a full season, Mitchell should be able to be a daily fantasy starter.
Padres
I'll take Nick Pivetta from the Padres. He's entering his first season with San Diego, and Dylan Cease and Michael King both were great in their first seasons in San Diego in 2024. I'm not saying Pivetta is going to be that good, but he has season-long keeper potential if he lowers his ERA a bit and keeps striking out a bunch of batters.
Braves
I'm taking Drake Baldwin from Atlanta. He's likely going to be the team's top catcher for the first several weeks of the season with Sean Murphy banged up, and I don't think Baldwin is going to give the job up after that.
Mets
Mark Vientos had a bit of a breakout in 2024, but I think he will emerge as a top-end fantasy third baseman in 2025. Hitting fifth in that stacked lineup should give Vientos a chance at 100+ RBIs.
Diamondbacks
I'm going to take Gabriel Moreno from Arizona. Injuries have slowed him over the past couple seasons, but if he's healthy for most of 2025, I think he could become a daily fantasy starter at catcher.
Cardinals
I'll stick with catchers and take Ivan Herrera from the Cardinals. St. Louis moved Willson Contreras to first base to open playing time for Herrera, and I think the youngster will emerge as a good fantasy asset in 2025.
Cubs
Matt Shaw is my pick from the Cubs. He's yet to play in the big leagues, but I think he quickly establishes himself as one of the top young hitters in the game. He should get everyday starts at third base, and could quickly be rostered in all fantasy leagues.
Giants
Kyle Harrison is my choice from the Giants. He took a bit of a step back in his second season, but I think he flashes big-time potential in 2025. He'll go from a deep-league option at the start of the season to a must-roster player in standard leagues by the end of the season.
Reds
I'm taking Matt McLain from the Reds. I've been singing his praises all year, and think he ends the year as one of the top fantasy second baseman by the time the regular season ends.
Pirates
Give me Nick Gonzales from Pittsburgh. He's already posted some solid numbers at the MLB level, but I think he will surprise plenty of people in 2025. He'll be a standard league option for long stretches of the season.
Nationals
I could take several players from the Nationals, but am settling on James Wood. He flashed some potential in his rookie season in 2024 and should improve in 2025. I think Washington's offense is going to surprise people this season, and Wood will be at the heart of things.
Marlins
I'll take Max Meyer from the Marlins. He's shown glimpses of elite fantasy production in MLB stints in his career, but I think he settles in during the 2025 season and becomes a good fantasy asset. The only thing that might hold him back is Miami if they manage his innings.
Rockies
I'll say Ezequiel Tovar is Colorado's breakout player. I think he's underrated going into 2025, but will finish as one of the top fantasy shortstops by the end of the season. Take him late in the later rounds of your fantasy draft and watch him take off and become a daily starter.
