Matt McLain's speed keeps him fantasy-relevant despite recent batting average slump

McLain is hitting just .194 over his last 14 days, though he has chipped in four stolen bases to help maintain some fantasy utility. With shortstop Elly De La Cruz on the injured list with a hamstring strain, McLain has stepped in as the primary shortstop for the fifth-place Reds (37-39), who are riding a two-game winning streak. He continues to see everyday playing time up the middle despite his recent contact issues.

While McLain's current .200 season average is disappointing, his power-speed profile remains intact with eight homers and 11 steals through 73 games. His underlying metrics and career track record suggest positive regression is coming toward our projection of a .239 average. Expect his batting average to climb closer to his career baseline as his strikeout rate stabilizes.

The Reds play six games this week, starting with three at home against Milwaukee followed by three on the road in Pittsburgh. McLain faces a mix of challenging arms like Paul Skenes (2.86 ERA) and Brandon Woodruff (3.00 ERA), but gets excellent bounce-back spots against high-ERA starters like Jared Jones and Brandon Sproat. Given his active stolen-base threat and guaranteed volume, he remains a solid fantasy lineup choice. Verdict: Start.
