De'Von Achane FAAB | How much to Spend on De'Von Achane

The Miami Dolphins put together a historic performance in their 70-20 rout of the Denver Broncos in week 3. That offensive showing saw several players shine. There were some familiar names at the center of the outburst, but one new name to the list was Dolphins running back De’Von Achane.

Achane’s 233-yard, four-touchdown performance was one that didn’t benefit many fantasy owners, as he started in just 1% of the 37% of leagues he was actually owned in. Achane will be a popular name on the waiver wire after his monster game, and I’m here to help you determine how much to spend on the Miami back.

De’Von Achane Fantasy Football Outlook

Achane was a healthy scratch for Miami in week 1 and then played just six snaps in the second week. He tallied just two touches and 9 yards coming into week 3.

Achane played just 30 snaps in week 3, which was about 41% of the team’s overall snaps, but he broke out in a huge way. He was the Phins’ leader in rushing attempts (18), racking up 203 yards and two scores along the way. Achane had runs of 26, 40 and 67 during his big showing.

Achane also was a threat as a pass catcher, hauling in the four passes thrown his way. He finished with 30 receiving yards and two more scores.

The rookie’s showing is going to make him a popular add across leagues this week, but here’s some things you need to know before trying to acquire him.

Achane saw an expanded role with wide receiver Jaylen Waddle out with a concussion and running back Salvon Ahmed out with a groin injury. While Ahmed had only played 31 snaps through two weeks, he appeared quite a bit ahead of Achane in the pecking order for snaps and targets. Waddle got 11 targets and nine total touches between the first two contests.

Achane’s breakout performance should definitely get him involved with the gameplan, even when Waddle and Ahmed are back, but to expect 22 touches a game is probably far too many. I would say that Achane has a chance to cut into starting running back Raheem Mostert’s touches, but Mostert also scored four touchdowns and went for 142 total yards on 20 touches against Denver. It’s a good problem to have if you are the Dolphins, but I don’t know if Achane can be productive consistently with Tyreek Hill, Waddle and Mostert also featured on offense.

Another thing to keep in mind is that running back Jeff Wilson is currently on the injured reserve list and is expected back around week 5. If any coach can get three running backs and a couple wide receivers involved consistently, it's Mike McDaniel, but it's hard for fantasy owners to know just what that might look like until it's happened for a few weeks.

How Much FAAB Should You Spend on De’Von Achane

As I’ve mentioned a few times already, Achane is going to be a popular name on the waiver wire before week 4. He’ll be among the leaders in Expected Waiver Interest (EWI) and is going to have a solid number attached to his bid budget average.

For reference, Los Angeles Chargers backup running back Joshua Kelley had a bid budget average percent of 25 last week. I’d expect a similar number because this is a very similar situation with Achane. There’s no injury to the starter, like in Kelley’s case, but both Achane and Kelley are clear backups for their teams.

I could see the percentage being a touch closer to 30, and upwards of 35, but I’d prefer to stick closer to 20-25% of my budget for Achane. I think he can earn himself a solid role on Miami’s offense, but there’s also a lot of other mouths to feed, and he certainly won’t be putting up week 3 numbers every week.

If you already own Mostert, then I think prioritizing Achane is a good choice. In those cases, I’d be more comfortable spending 25-30% of my budget, because you are protecting yourself if Mostert were to go down.

If you missed out on guys like Kelley and Cleveland Browns’ Jerome Ford a week ago and are in desperate need of a back, then that’s when I’d spend that 35%. Achane isn’t likely going to be a consistent fantasy performer the rest of the season if everyone else in Miami remains healthy, but he’s got more upside than a lot of the other guys available on the waiver wire and could help you out during several upcoming weeks.

Keep checking FantasySP’s predictive FAAB numbers to make sure you are getting the latest information on Achane’s waiver wire value.
