Struggling Reds Closer Tony Santillan Secure in Role But Best Avoided on Fantasy Benches

Santillan remains the top option in the Reds' bullpen, a role reinforced by injuries to Pierce Johnson and Emilio Pagan. However, the right-hander has struggled mightily during the fifth-place Reds' current four-game slide, posting a massive 10.59 ERA and 2.06 WHIP over his last 14 days.

Although his current 6.74 ERA is ugly, our models project a rest-of-season recovery toward a 4.24 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. He has the pedigree of a dominant reliever, having posted a stellar 2.83 ERA last season, indicating his recent control issues are likely a temporary slump.

Cincinnati has six games scheduled this week against San Diego and Arizona. While our projection expects 3.2 innings of improved 3.44 ERA ball, his severe volatility makes him too risky to start in standard formats right now. Verdict: Sit.
