Top Prospect Edwin Arroyo Joins Reds Infield Amid De La Cruz Injury
The Reds called up their highly-touted shortstop prospect on June 1 following a hamstring injury to Elly De La Cruz. Arroyo made his major league debut immediately, picking up his first big-league hit on Monday, though he is just 1-for-8 with six strikeouts over his first three games. The fifth-place Reds (31-30) are hoping the 22-year-old can provide a defensive and offensive spark while De La Cruz recuperates on the 10-day injured list.
While his initial cup of coffee shows a tiny .125 batting average, Arroyo's minor-league track record suggests excellent upside. Prior to his promotion, he was tearing up Triple-A with a .323/.383/.562 slash line and 11 home runs. Our models expect some natural regression as he adjusts to big-league pitching, but his combination of speed and emerging power makes him an incredibly intriguing long-term asset.
Looking at the remainder of the week, Cincinnati travels to St. Louis for a three-game weekend series. Arroyo is lined up to face Kyle Leahy (4.25 ERA) and Matthew Liberatore (4.35 ERA), which are relatively friendly matchups for a young hitter. However, because of his high strikeout rate during his first few games, he needs more time to adjust. He is a priority bench stash in deeper leagues, but for this week's active lineups, you should Sit him.
