Taysom Hill is Officially Listed as a QB
Twitter was ablaze yesterday when the New Orleans Saints officially moved Hill on their depth chart from tight end to quarterback. He became TE ineligible on multiple platforms and fantasy owners were not happy at all. Especially owners who were banking on him to be their TE1 and now how to pivot to someone else with just days before kickoff.
Hill went from being a cheat code to being essentially useless. When you can start him at tight end there is a chance you are getting a QB in your lowest scoring offensive spot. Now you're just getting a gadget guy in your highest-scoring spot. On platforms where he is only eligible at QB, he will likely serve as little more than a name on the waiver wire. Here at FantasySp, we have been advocating for drafting him all summer and this certainly puts a major damper on that advice.
We do believe there is a reason the Saints made this move even though they haven't come out and said it. There is a new rule in the NFL this year that a team can have an emergency quarterback on the active roster who doesn't count against the 53 men. Each team will be allowed to designate a third QB as their emergency QB and he can be activated in case of injury. By moving Hill to QB on their depth chart, now instead of keeping Jameis Winston active as their QB2 they can designate him as the emergency QB and keep Hill active like they were always planning to anyway. They can still use Hill in the same role that they always have. It will be interesting to see if other teams try to do something similar and where the league draws the line with this gray area.
Colts Plan to Implement a Running Back by Committee
With Jonathan Taylor officially out for a minimum of four weeks after being placed on the PUP list, Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen has come out and said that the team will take a committee approach in his absence and ride the "hot hand." That's not what any fantasy owner wants to hear, but in this backfield, the blow is lessened because not many were relying on a Colts' RB to carry them to victory.
While this may or may not be true, it shouldn't have a huge impact on Week 1. Zack Moss is widely considered their best running back and listed as their RB1, and he's not expected to play this week as he heals up from a broken arm. That should leave Deon Jackson as the clear RB1. Rookie Evan Hull will also be in the mix, but we don't anticipate a mediocre rookie Day 3 running back getting a whole lot of run and taking over the backfield in his first game as a professional. Jackson is both more experienced and more talented. This should be Jackson's backfield in Week 1. After Week 1, all bets are off.
Jahmyr Gibbs to Function as the Primary Downfield Threat in Detroit
This was an interesting report from Tim Twentymam who writes for the Detroit Lions' official website DetroitLions.com. He stated that he believes that Gibbs could serve as the primary deep threat in Detroit early on in the season with DJ Chark now gone and Jameson Williams suspended for the first six games of the season. He went on to say, "Vertical threats don't have to be receivers so that's one thing to watch out for with Gibbs. He made a ton of catches down the field in training camp and I think that's something we could see that is a little unconventional from other pass-catching backs around the league."
We aren't sure we actually buy into this as we hear reports like this every offseason and they rarely come to fruition. How often do people get excited about a report stating that a running back is being used in the slot at camp for it to mean nothing come the regular season? So we are taking this with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, if he could add some deep receiving plays to his already high-upside fantasy value, he could become one of the most dynamic fantasy options in the league almost immediately.
Gibbs already has top-12 draft capital and is an elite athlete. Now you stick him behind one of the best offensive lines in the NFL on an explosive offense and his upside is immense. If you add a ton of targets and air yards in the passing attack beyond your usual dump-offs, and he could have a year like we've never really seen before. While we aren't completely convinced that this will be the case this is definitely a situation to keep a close eye on when you are watching Thursday Night Football on opening night.
