Mason Montgomery | Fantasy Outlook

Montgomery's Ratio Woes Make Him an Easy Sit

Montgomery remains a primary late-inning option for the second-place Pirates, who hold a 33-29 record. However, his recent form is highly concerning, highlighted by a brutal stretch over the last week where his ERA skyrocketed. While an illness keeping fellow reliever Chris Devenski sidelined keeps Montgomery's hold on high-leverage work secure, his current command issues make him a massive fantasy liability.

Our models project Montgomery to settle into a 4.13 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over 61.0 innings this season. While his strikeout stuff is legitimate, with 32 strikeouts in 19.0 innings, his current 6.16 ERA and 1.68 WHIP align too closely with his career struggles. Until he limits the traffic on the base paths, his rough ratios will continue to negate his solid hold totals.

The Pirates finish their series in Houston today before heading to Atlanta for a tough weekend road trip. Facing potent offenses and tough opposing starters like Spencer Strider makes Montgomery far too risky to deploy in weekly lineups. Sit him this week and search for more stable ratio help on the waiver wire.
