2023 Fantasy Baseball Week 5 Closer Tracker: Pete Fairbanks, Carlos Estevez, More (5/5/23)
Welcome to the Week 5 Closer Tracker update! I had some technical difficulties on Friday so didn't get to post, but it ended up being a good thing because there was quite a bit of closer movement over the weekend! More on that below...
In the chart below, I’ve created a Closer Tracker that will hopefully stay ahead of the closer curve. I’m going to update this every Friday for the rest of the season, so please feel free to send feedback if there’s anything you’d like to see.
The Closer Tracker is organized in three ways:
- In the left column, you’ll find my closer power rankings. This order is based on a mix of current statistics weighted (in my mind) with how I think these players will perform over the rest of the season.
- In the third column, you’ll see my best attempt at quantifying how stable a closer’s job is. Or said another way, how closely do you have to pay attention to this situation?
- In the right column, you’ll find the player who looks to be next in line. If you see SHAKY in the third column, you should probably grab the player next in line off the waiver wire.
Lastly, keep scrolling all the way to the bottom for my top takeaways. I promise this isn’t a marketing trick – I just don’t want to spoil the Closer Tracker.

Top Takeaways:
- Pete Fairbanks was placed on the injured list so Jason Adam will step in as the Rays' closer. Fairbanks should be back soon, but grab Adam if you can as a short-term solution.
- Rasiel Iglesias is back for the Braves and will step back in the closer role. It was fun while it lasted, A.J. Minter. I'll probably end up moving Iglesias up on this list next week if he's able to string a few strong performances together.
- Will Smith has emerged from the Rangers closer committee and will have the job for the foreseeable future.
- Jeurys Familia was designated for assignment by the A's, which means Zach Jackson is now their closer. He won't get too many opportunities with how little the A's win, but he's worth an add in deeper leagues.
- Yennier Cano has been on of the best setup guys in the league so far this season and is worth an add as more than Felix Bautista insurance.
- Carlos Estevez has been fantastic since taking over for the Angels. He's another one I'll probably move up on the list next week as long as he keeps this up.
- Jose Alvardo is technically in a committee, but I'm treating him as if he's the Phillies closer because he's been that good.
