Will Smith Sidelined with Neck Disc Injury; Targeting Late-Week Return

Sidelined since June 6 with an inflamed neck disc, Smith has not played over the last seven days and batted just .154 in the 14 days prior to his injury. His absence leaves a hole for the first-place Dodgers (45-27), with prospect Dalton Rushing currently stepping up as the everyday starter behind the plate. Smith is optimistic about returning to action late this coming weekend when he is eligible to be activated.

Before the neck issue arose, Smith was having a down year by his standards, batting .249 with six homers across 52 games compared to his career .262 mark and our season projection of a .263 average with 20 home runs. However, his strong .343 on-base percentage indicates his plate discipline remains elite, suggesting a quick bounce-back to his usual category-stabilizing form once healthy.

The Dodgers play six home games this week against the Rays and Orioles, but Smith will miss the early matchups against tough Tampa Bay starters like Nick Martinez and Drew Rasmussen. While he could potentially return for the tail end of the Baltimore series against high-ERA pitchers like Trey Gibson, he cannot be trusted in active lineups yet. Verdict: Sit.
