Fantasy Baseball Week 19 Waiver Wire Pickups: Eury Perez, Davis Schneider, and More!

Nick Roberts Aug 7th 9:54 AM EDT.

Good morning! Or afternoon or evening or whenever you’re reading this…

It’s Week 19 of the fantasy baseball season. And that means it’s also no time to be too sentimental, hopeful, or patient with players who may be struggling on your roster (more on that in tomorrow’s Waiver Droppables). And it’s also no time to get picky about a player on waivers because he had a bad month of April or May (or even June or July). There are less than two months to go in the MLB season, so we’re really just looking to string together some good weeks at this point.

With that, let’s look at the Week 19 Fantasy Baseball Waivers and see if we can solidify our rosters before the home stretch of the season.

As always, check out the fantasy assistant for personalized waiver wire recommendations and team analysis. Make moves based on projections, strengths and weaknesses, waiver alerts, and lots more.

Top Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Adds

(ownership percentages are based on ESPN leagues)

Eury Perez, P, Miami Marlins (38.2%)

I don’t usually like to include guys who are above 25 percent, but I’ll make an exception for Perez. He’s that good. After a month down in Double-A (presumably to save his arm a bit), Perez has been recalled and will start for the Marlins against the Reds on Monday. The 20-year-old will look to pick up where he left off with a 5-3 record to go with a 2.36 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 61 strikeouts through 53.1 innings. While I’m sure a lot of fantasy managers held onto him while he was in the minors, I’ll give you all a minute to go look and see if Perez is on your waiver wire. Grab him immediately if he is.

Davis Scheider, 2B, Toronto Blue Jays (5.3%)

Schneider was an absolute beast at Triple-A Buffalo and hit 21 home runs this season before his recent call-up. He’s carried that momentum straight into the majors and has nine hits in his first 13 at-bats (good for a .692 average) to go along with three runs scored, two home runs, and five RBI. All in three games. Will he keep that up? Of course not. But the 24-year-old is a must-add player due to his potential. He hit third in the Blue Jays’ lineup on Sunday, and Toronto will find ways to get Schneider regular at-bats as long as he keeps raking.

Chase Silseth, P, Los Angeles Angels (7.6%)

Silseth has been an absolute stud lately and should be added in most leagues as a high-upside speculative waiver add. Over his past three starts (17.1 innings), the 23-year-old has racked up 26 strikeouts (again, in just 17.1 innings!) to go along with a 2.04 ERA. While I don't love that he's given up four home rusn over the course of those three starts, Silseth has struck out double-digit batters in two of those starts so I'm willing to overlook the longballs (for now). The Angels are in a bit of a tail spin right now, but Silseth is lined up for a start against the Astros next Sunday and is worth a look if you have a roster spot for him.

Johan Oviedo, P, Pittsburgh Pirates (17.0%)

While Oviedo’s season-long numbers (6-11, 4.18 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 117 strikeouts in 131.1 innings) aren’t stellar, he’s been really good lately and qualifies as one of those “we’re really just looking to string together some good weeks at this point” guys. Over the past 30 days, the 25-year-old boasts a 3-1 record with a 2.32 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 30 strikeouts over 31.0 innings. He’s also limited opponents to a .147 batting average during that span. Oviedo has won his last three starts and has only allowed a total of two runs in those starts. He’s obviously no sure thing, but there’s a months’ worth of positive momentum here and that makes Oviedo worth an add in most fantasy leagues.

Gary Sanchez, C, San Diego Padres (10.9%)

Remember when Sanchez used to be a 30 home run guy? I barely do either, but he did exactly that back in 2017 and 2019. While the 30-year-old has had his struggles over recent seasons, he's come back into form in a big way. Since the beginning of June, Sanchez has more home runs than any other catcher in baseball. Sure, he's only hitting .222, but he's been hitting .273 over the last month and has eight home runs over that span. While I don't usually care much about catchers for fantasy baseball, it's always a nice advantage to get a boost from your catcher spot. And that's exactly what Sanchez is doing. He's available in almost 90 percent of ESPN leagues, so there's a good chance he's available in your league too.
