Fantasy Baseball Week 10 Waiver Wire Adds: Daulton Varsho, Colt Keith, Brenton Doyle and More

Discussing the most-added fantasy baseball players in the 10th week of the fantasy baseball season.

The FantasySP Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pickups page had a lot of repeat names from previous weeks, so I decided to hold off on a waiver wire story until Tuesday.

Let’s look at the top five hitters from the waiver wire list and help you determine if they are worth an add right now.

Daulton Varsho Fantasy Outlook

Varsho always seems to be right on the fringe of being owned in most fantasy baseball leagues. He’s currently owned in 77% of leagues after a recent little hot streak at the plate.

In 50 games this season, Varshi is hitting .205, with a .298 on-base percentage. He’s got 20 extra-base hits, half of which are home runs. Varsho also has 30 RBIs, 31 runs scored, five stolen bases, 22 walks and 46 strikeouts this season.

Varsho has just three hits over the past five games, but two were homers and the other was a triple. He’s also walked four times in that span and gone on to score five runs. He’s struck out six times, but also drove in seven runs.

You can tell by Varsho’s low average, but high power numbers, that he probably gets on several hot streaks during the season. Varsho is on one of those streaks now, and is worthy of a fantasy roster spot in a bunch of leagues. It won’t last for super long most likely, so take advantage of things while you can.

Ian Happ Fantasy Outlook

Happ is on a bit of a surge of his own at the plate, which explains why his own percentage is on the rise. He’s currently at 73% owned.

In 49 games this season, Happ has a .220 average and .330 OBP. He’s tallied 15 extra-base hits (four homers), 17 RBIs, 25 runs, two stolen bases, 27 walks and 58 strikeouts.

Over his past six games, Happ has six hits and a .333 average. He’s homered twice and doubled three times during that span. He’s struck out six times, walked twice, drove in three runs and scored three times.

It’s been a bit of an underwhelming season for the fantasy owners that drafted Happ. He’s heating up a bit, and might be worth adding, even if you don’t want to start him right now. At least consider stashing him at the end of your bench.

Colt Keith Fantasy Outlook

Keith appears to be settling in after a couple of months in the MLB. He’s owned in 26% of leagues, but that number was around 10% just a week ago, so he’s definitely trending up.

In his first 46 MLB games, Keith has a .235 average and .294 on-base percentage. He has seven extra-base hits (one homer) among his 35 total knocks. Keith also has 16 RBIs, 14 runs, three stolen bases, 12 walks and 28 strikeouts.

Including a four-hit outbreak on May 17, Keith is hitting .469 in the 10 total games since. He’s got three doubles and a homer during that span, along with six RBIs and runs scored. Keith has struck out seven times and walked twice.

The second baseman is just 22 years old, and getting his first taste of the big leagues. To expect the top prospect to be great right from the start of the season was asking a lot, but now it appears he’s settled in a bit and starting to make a difference for his team.

With how much hype was surrounding him as a prospect, I’d try to take a gamble on him if I had a roster spot to play with. He’s startable right now, and offers a lot of potential. At least try to stash him on your bench and maybe take advantage of better numbers of his as the season rolls along and he continues to settle in.

Brenton Doyle Fantasy Outlook

Doyle appears pretty often in my daily takeaway stories, so I was actually a little surprised to see his own percentage at only 74%. His own percentage chart is up and down this season, but he’s at his highest mark over the past month.

In 51 games, Doyle is hitting .269, with a .340 OBP. He’s posted 17 extra-base hits (including five homers) among his 50 total hits. Doyle also has 15 RBIs, 35 runs, 14 stolen bases, 19 walks and 59 strikeouts.

His strikeout number is a bit high, but his average is solid and he’s a pretty well-rounded fantasy option otherwise.

Doyle is pretty consistently getting on base. Over his past eight games, he has seven hits and six walks. He’s struck out nine times over that span, but also drove in two, stole six bases and scored seven times. However, only one of his hits has gone for extra bases.

The center fielder already looks like a solid backup fantasy option. He can start in deeper leagues every day, and in standard leagues when your starter is out or off. I’d imagine there’s plenty of fantasy teams out there who would benefit greatly from adding Doyle instead of a player currently on their bench. Assess your team, compare your player to Doyle and react accordingly.

Matt Vierling Fantasy Outlook

Vierling is the second Tiger to make this week’s story. He’s only owned in 9% of leagues right now, but that number is on the rise.

Vierling has appeared in 47 games so far, posting a .278 average and .311 OBP already. He’s got 14 extra-base hits (including five home runs), 23 RBIs, 19 runs, seven walks and 35 strikeouts.

Vierling has mostly played third base and center field for Detroit. He has a few starts in right and left field, along with some starts as the team’s designated hitter. What this should tell you is that not only does he have some position versatility, but also that he’s playing well enough to be in the lineup often. Just playing is a big thing to look for in a waiver wire option, and Vierling is actually performing well at the plate too.

Vierling had a four-hit game his last time out, but has an additional four hits over the previous five games. He’s got four extra-base hits (two homers), eight RBIs, three walks, four strikeouts and four runs scored over that span.

I wouldn’t call Vierling a must add by any means, even in deeper leagues. But, he’s been a pretty solid fantasy option this season and at least worth considering, especially if you could use some help at 3B or CF.

If his numbers dip, simply drop him and look elsewhere for some help. That’s the beauty of the waiver wire, especially during a long baseball season. You can keep tweaking your roster and riding with the hottest hitters and find a lot of success doing that.
