Tomoyuki Sugano struggles to find footing at Coors Field ahead of difficult matchup

The veteran righty has hit a rough patch, posting a disappointing 9.90 ERA and 1.90 WHIP over his last two starts. Despite these recent struggles, his role as the solid number two starter in the Colorado rotation remains secure, especially with key arms like Jose Quintana on the injured list. It remains a tough climb for the fifth-place Rockies, who currently sit at 28-47 and are looking for stability on the mound.

While Sugano’s recent 30-day ERA of 6.38 is painful, it represents a regression toward his career baselines after an incredibly hot start to the campaign. Our models expect him to settle in near his season projection of a 4.86 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. Given his history of being home-run prone, his high-altitude home environment will continue to threaten his fantasy value and keep his floor very low.

Looking at the remaining schedule, Sugano is slated for just one start this week, coming on Saturday at home against the Pirates. This is a highly unfavorable matchup as he goes toe-to-toe with Pittsburgh's Paul Skenes, who carries a stellar 2.85 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. Given the poor matchup and the park factors, fantasy managers should Sit Sugano this week.
