Ildemaro Vargas | Fantasy Outlook

Ildemaro Vargas looks to break out of a major slump after avoiding serious injury in a scary collision.

The second-place Diamondbacks (34-31) dodged a bullet when Vargas avoided serious injury in a violent June 4 collision, returning with only minor bruises. With Carlos Santana on the 60-day injured list, Vargas remains the primary starter at first base. However, his bat has gone cold, as he is hitting just .071 over the last seven days and .143 over the last fortnight.

Vargas's hot start and historic 27-game hitting streak inflated his overall season stats to a .280 average. However, his miserable .189 average over the past 30 days is a harsh regression toward his career norm and our projected .246 rest-of-season mark. Without significant home run or stolen base potential, his fantasy value hinges entirely on his batting average, making this slump incredibly damaging.

Arizona has six road games scheduled this week. While Vargas faces tough starters like Max Meyer (2.81 ERA, 42% start rate), he also gets highly favorable matchups against Ryan Gusto (10.80 ERA, 1.80 WHIP). Still, his current slump makes him too risky to deploy. Verdict: Sit.
