Corbin Burnes Suffers Major Injury Setback, Pushing Estimated Return to September

Corbin Burnes has yet to debut this season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery, and his recovery just hit a major roadblock. The ace suffered a teres major strain during his throwing progression and has been shut down. This devastating setback for the third-place Diamondbacks (32-29) pushes his projected return back to September, a massive blow for a team currently riding a two-game losing streak.

When healthy, Burnes is an undisputed fantasy ace, carrying a stellar 2.70 ERA from his last active campaign. However, our rest-of-season data now projects just 41.0 innings, 115 strikeouts, and 5 wins upon his eventual return. At age 31, a muscle strain during ligament rehab is a major red flag, severely limiting his rest-of-season appeal.

Arizona wraps up a series against the Dodgers today before hosting the Nationals this weekend, but Burnes will remain on the injured list. Because he will not provide fantasy utility until the final month of the season, managers in standard redraft formats should feel comfortable letting him go. Weekly Verdict: Sit.
