Lucas Giolito | Fantasy Outlook

Lucas Giolito battles elevated WHIP and control issues in the Padres rotation.

Lucas Giolito continues to hold a spot in the starting rotation for the 38-35 Padres, largely because of a depleted pitching staff with Joe Musgrove and Yu Darvish on the injured list. Over his last 30 days, Giolito has logged a 4.46 ERA over 20.2 innings but has struggled mightily with a 2.08 WHIP and 18 walks. He is currently working as a back-end starter but offers very little stability.

Giolito's current form is a far cry from our rest-of-season projections, which expect a 4.36 ERA and a much more palatable 1.34 WHIP over 155.0 innings. His current 1.83 WHIP on the year is fueled by an unsustainable walk rate and a major dip in strikeouts, with only 16 punchouts in 25.2 innings. While some positive regression is expected, he cannot be trusted until his command improves.

Looking at the remaining schedule, Giolito is scheduled for a road start on Sunday, June 21st, against Texas. He will square off against MacKenzie Gore, who carries a 4.27 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. Given Giolito's ongoing battle with walks and the risk of a high WHIP damaging your matchup, it is best to avoid using him in your active lineup. Verdict: Sit.
