There were only three MLB games played on Monday, July 1. Two of them went to extra innings and all three games were within two runs.

There’s not a ton to break down from the day, but let’s still go over the top hitting and pitching performances. We’ll combine everything into one story instead of breaking things into two.

We cover the top performers every weekday, so check back each day for those writeups. Here’s the stories from the top weekend performers: hitters and pitchers.

Astros 3, Blue Jays 1

Yordan Alvarez hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning for some big insurance runs for Houston. Jeremy Pena homered in the fifth inning for the team’s first run. Alvarez also walked earlier in the contest.

Alex Bregman led the Astros with two hits and he also scored a run.

Hunter Brown started for Houston and got the win after working six scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and three walks, while striking out five.

Over his past five starts, Brown is 5-0 with a 0.29 earned run average (one earned run across 31 innings). He’s faced some bad offenses over that stretch, but he’s pitching too well to treat as a streaming option right now.

Rafael Montero and Bryan Abreu each tossed scoreless innings to earn holds for the Astros. Josh Hader allowed a homer in the ninth, but was still able to record his 13th save of the season.

Yariel Rodriguez started for Toronto and took the tough loss after allowing a run on two hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out six batters along the way.

Ernie Clement homered for the Blue Jays. He had two of the team’s four hits in the contest and was the only batter to reach base twice.

Mets 9, Nationals 7 (10 inn.)

New York scored six runs in the 10th inning and then held Washington to four in the bottom half to escape with a win.

J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer in the 10th for New York. Jose Iglesias added a two-run shot in the frame. Martinez also walked twice in the contest.

Rockies 8, Brewers 7 (10 inn.)

Colorado won a back-and-forth contest over Milwaukee, scoring once in the 10th to secure the home win.

Brenton Doyle hit two home runs for Colorado (a two-run shot and solo blast), while Charlie Blackmon added a solo bomb. Blackmon had two hits total, while Doyle added a third hit and run scored and also walked once and stole a base.

Brendan Rodgers drove in a run on two hits and two walks and also scored once for Colorado. Jake Cave and Nolan Jones each drove in a run on two hits, while Cave also scored once and Jones drew a walk.
