Week 12 Fantasy Football RB and WR Droppables: Should you drop George Pickens, Kareem Hunt, and Gabe Davis?
We're always looking to make moves in fantasy football, and this is going to be a weekly spot where we look at some of the most widely-dropped players across fantasy leagues and decide whether you should (or shouldn’t) cut bait with them – due to either underperformance, injury, or otherwise.
We covered waiver adds already, but in order to pick up someone, you have to drop someone. And that isn’t a decision you should take lightly. We’ve all made drops we’ve come to regret.
Let’s take a look at some of the most dropped running backs and wide receivers for Week 12 and decide if they’re actually drop-worthy.
As always, check out the fantasy assistant for personalized waiver wire recommendations and team analysis. Make moves based on projections, strengths and weaknesses, waiver alerts, and lots more.
Week 12 Fantasy Football Droppables
Kareem Hunt, RB, Cleveland Browns
Hunt is stuck in a bit of a timeshare with Jerome Ford, and his upside is majorly capped because of it. He's consistently seeing 10-15 touches per game, but Hunt hasn't put up double-digit fantasy points for three straight weeks as he's not doing much in the passing game. The veteran has yet to rush for more than 55 yards in a game all yea and has been largely touchdown-dependent because of it. He's thankfully come through on those touchdowns for the most part with six in his last six games, but we saw what happens this week when he doesn't score a touchdown as he only put up six fantasy points. It's worth holding onto Hunt as a potential flex play in deeper leagues, but he's not someone you should be excited about starting at this point.
Verdict: Hold
Ty Chandler, RB, Minnesota Vikings
Well, that was fun while it lasted. Chandler was one of last week's most popular pickups, but Alexander Mattison didn't actually miss any action and relegated Chandler to the RB2 role for the Vikings. While it's worth noting that Chandler put up 15 PPR points, he did so averaging over seven yards a carry so I'm not sure we can count on that again. I still think Chandler has value in deeper leagues (and as a Mattison handcuff), but I don't think we need to prioritize holding onto him as a standalone value as he'll struggle to provide flex value as long as Mattison is healthy. Think of Chandler as Kareem Hunt-lite at this point.
Verdict: Drop
George Pickens, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers
I really wanted Pickens to bust out this year, but it just hasn't happened. While part of that is because of Kenny Pickett and his limitations, part of it is because of Pickens. He's had too many mental errors this season and has stunted his own potential a bit. While the second-year player hasn't put up double-digit fantasy points since Week 7, I'm still holding out hope with the Steelers firing Matt Canada on Tuesday. I may be a sucker in doing so, but I think there's enough upside here to wait and see what happens.
Verdict: Hold
Diontae Johnson, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers
Similarly to Pickens, I'm holding out hope that Canada's firing will lead to bigger and better things for Johnson. But it's also extremely worrisome that he's only caught three passes in his last two games combined. The targets have been there with 12 total during that timespan, but things aren't looking great for Johnson. While I wouldn't blame anyone for holding onto him in the hopes that a new offensive playcaller will change his fortunes, I'm also totally fine with moving on from Johnson as he's just not delivering much fantasy value right now.
Verdict: Drop
Gabe Davis, WR, Buffalo Bills
Outside of a really good Week 8, Davis hasn't really done much since Week 5. He's caught zero balls in two of his last three games and has only seen eight targets during that timespan. With Dalton Kincaid commanding targets and Khalil Shakir emerging, Davis is stuck fighting for targets in the Bills offense and has lost a lot of fantasy value. With the normal disclaimer that I think he's worth holding onto in deeper leagues, I don't think Davis is any more valuable than most mid-tier receivers right now. And I'd evevn go so far as to say that Shakir has just as much value as he does.
Verdict: Drop
