Bryan Baker | Fantasy Outlook

Baker Takes Over as Rays Closer with Kimbrel Sidelined

With veteran Craig Kimbrel recently landing on the 15-day injured list due to a right wrist strain, Bryan Baker has officially ascended to the primary closer role for the first-place Tampa Bay Rays. Baker has been superb lately, posting a microscopic 1.61 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP over 11.2 innings in his last 30 days. He anchors the bullpen for a 36-23 Rays squad looking to snap a three-game skid and maintain their division lead.

Baker's excellent 2.21 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over 24.4 innings this season represent a massive step forward from his 4.41 ERA in 2025. While our season projections expected a regression toward a 3.88 ERA and 1.22 WHIP, Baker's increased strikeout rates with 29 strikeouts in 24.4 innings and high-leverage opportunities make him highly sustainable in the short term. He has already accumulated 16 saves on the year, far outpacing our model's initial expectation of nine.

The Rays head to Miami for a three-game weekend series starting June 5, where Baker should find ample save opportunities. Tampa Bay faces a Marlins team running out Tyler Phillips with a 1.63 ERA and Sandy Alcantara with a 4.70 ERA. With our models projecting another 1.3 saves and a strong 1.125 ERA for the remainder of the week, Baker is a must-roster asset. Weekly Verdict: Start.
