2023 Fantasy Baseball Week 14 Start/Sit: Domingo German, Julio Urias, More!
Happy Fourth of July Week and welcome to the Week 14 Start/Sit article!
It’s time to face the typical Monday decisions we need to make as we set our rosters. Which pitchers have a two-start week? Which ones have juicy matchups? Which hitters are on a hot streak? Which ones are having trouble buying a hit? Think of this like a fantasy football streamers article.
I’ll be back later in the week to look at Droppables (Tuesday), Trade Values (Wednesday) and to dive into the Closer Report (Friday), but for today, we’re going to take a look at who we should start and sit this week.
And with that, let’s identify the right (or wrong) players we should have in our fantasy baseball lineups for the week of July 3.
Top Fantasy Baseball Starts
Domingo German, P, New York Yankees
I was a dummy and said to sit German last week. It made sense! It just didn’t work. Sorry about that if you listened to me. Let’s try to make up for it here with a two-start with for German, starting with the Orioles on Monday. Coming off his perfect game, the 30-year-old should have some momentum behind him after suffering back-to-back blowouts. German would then be on-track to face a bad Cubs lineup over the weekend. While I can’t make up for a bad recommendation last week, I hope German comes out and absolutely dominates his two starts this week to at least somewhat make amends for me.
Tommy Pham, OF, New York Mets
No one is hotter than Tommy Pham right now. The 35-year-old journeyman hit .349 with six home runs and four steals and he’s hitting .462 with two home runs and one steal over his past seven games. While I don’t think Pham is a season-long pickup outside of deeper leagues, it’s worth jumping on the runaway freight train while it’s, well, running away. I’m sure it’ll hit the wall over the next couple of weeks, but it’s worth seeing if you can get another .400-plus week out of Pham while he’s raking.
Maikel Garcia, SS/3B, Kansas City Royals
While my German recommendation last week was bad, I also recommended Garcia as a waiver wire pickup, so I guess I wasn’t fully off. While Garcia is more of a one-trick pony he has three steals over the past week, which brings his season-long total up to 13. Like Pham, he might end up being a short-term pickup, but he’s similarly on fire and is 9-for-12 over his last three games. Jump on and see if you can at least get a few games of hot hitting (and maybe some steals) out of the 23-year-old.
Top Fantasy Baseball Sits
Julio Urias, P, Los Angeles Dodgers
Urias returned from the Injured List last week after missing more than a month with a hamstring injury, but things didn’t go so great as he allowed five runs in 3.0 innings while striking out just two batters. While things will get better for Urias (don’t even think about dropping him), I’ll be sitting him for his next time out there against the Pirates. Is there a chance of missing a good start? Maybe. But I think the possibility of him getting lit up again is greater. Let’s let him work out some kinks before we roll him back out there.
Cedric Mullins, OF, Baltimore Orioles
Mullins is a really good player, but he’s sinking his fantasy lineups right now and needs to be sat in weekly lineups. While the 28-year-old still has great season-long numbers, he hit just .200 during the month of June while adding a grand total of zero home runs and zero steals. Mullins continued his lackluster play by hitting .200 last week with, you guessed it, zero home runs and zero steals. While he shouldn’t be dropped, Mullins needs to take a seat on your fantasy bench for now. He’s just not adding any value (quite the opposite).
Kris Bryant, OF, Colorado Rockies
Bryant was 2-for-5 against the Tigers on Sunday, but he’s just 3-for-14 since returning from the Injured List. He’ll be away from home this week as the Rockies take on the Astros and won’t get the benefit of Coors Field. He’ll also likely get a day or two off in the near future as he works his back to pre-injury form. The 31-year-old might be a good case study for an edition of The Droppables soon, but I’d veer towards benching him before starting or dropping him this week.
