Kodai Senga | Fantasy Outlook

Senga struggles in shaky return from IL; fantasy managers should exercise patience on the bench

Senga made his highly anticipated return from the injured list on June 16, but struggled over 4.0 innings, walking four and surrendering four earned runs. The fifth-place Mets, who currently sit at 33-41, eased the right-hander back after he overcame lumbar spine inflammation and ulnar nerve irritation. While he is healthy and back in the rotation, his command was clearly rusty in his first major league action in months.

Under the hood, Senga's season projection remains encouraging with a 3.76 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP over 115.0 expected innings. His strikeout upside remains high, but his career 1.24 to 1.36 WHIP baselines indicate that walks will continue to be a factor as he works back to full strength. Do not panic and drop him, but expect some initial turbulence as he regains his velocity and splitter feel.

With today being June 18, Senga has already made his single scheduled start for the week and will not pitch during the Mets' remaining road series against the division-rival Phillies. Because his week is finished and he requires time to rebuild his pitch count and efficiency, he belongs on fantasy benches. Verdict: Sit.
