Top Fantasy Pitchers
There's a couple St. Louis pitchers on the ADP list, led by closer Ryan Helsley. He's going at pick 67.13 on average.
Sonny Gray is going at pick 89.07. No other pitcher has an ADP under 200.
Helsley was the No. 2 fantasy closer in points leagues last season.
In 65 appearances, he had a 7-4 record and 2.04 earned run average - he has a career 2.04 ERA. Helsley also had 79 strikeouts over 66 1/3 innings pitched, while earning 49 saves.
If you believe Helsley is headed for a repeat performance of 2024, he's a great fantasy draft value as the fifth reliever off draft boards. I do expect some regression, especially in the save department, so I think his ADP is fair. I think most closers are going too early in drafts, and prefer Helsley in the late 70s if possible.
Gray pitched pretty well across his 28 starts for the Cardinals in 2024.
He went 13-9 with a 3.84 ERA. Gray struck out 203 batters over 166 1/3 innings.
Gray's fantasy ceiling is really high if he can get in over 30 starts, and 200 innings wouldn't be out of the picture. His strikeouts per nine innings mark last season was 11, which is over 2 Ks better than his career average, so I expect some regression.
I'd still be OK taking Gray near his ADP. Getting him as a third fantasy starter is ideal in my book, and if you get him as a fourth or fifth guy, your rotation is absolutely stacked.
Other Starting Options
According to FanGraphs, Erick Fedde, Miles Mikolas, Andre Pallante and Steven Matz are the other projected starting pitchers.
Matthew Liberatore and Ryan Fernandez are the projected setup men for Helsley. JoJo Romero, Phil Maton, John King, Chris Roycroft and Kyle Leahy are the other projected bullpen arms. Zack Thompson is another relief option, but is dealing with a strained lat right now.
Fedde made 31 starts in stints with the Cardinals and White Sox last season. He had a 3.30 ERA overall, along with a 9-9 record. He struck out 154 batters over 177 1/3 innings.
He's a deep-league option to kick off the season, but in the right matchups, Fedde is also a standard league streaming option.
Mikolas was not able to rebound from a tough 2023, posting even worse numbers in 2024.
In 32 starts, he covered 171 2/3 innings, but had a 5.35 ERA and 10-11 record. Mikolas struck out 122 batters along the way.
He's just a deep-league option to start the season. He'd need to post several solid starts before getting to a place where fantasy owners are comfortable rolling him out as a standard league streamer.
Pallante was pretty good across 20 starts and 29 games in 2024.
He went 8-8, but with a 3.78 ERA. Pallante struck out 94 batters over 121 1/3 innings. I see him as a deep-league option only to start the regular season, but also with some standard league streaming value - I don't think he'd ever get to a keeper status in standard league, but you never know.
Matz struggled across his seven starts and 12 appearances with the Cardinals in 2024. He had a 5.08 ERA and 1-2 record, along with 33 punchouts over 44 1/3 innings. If Matz can stick in the rotation, he has at least deep-league fantasy value - he'd need to pitch well for a bit before becoming a standard league possibility.
I don't see any other members of the St. Louis bullpen being big fantasy assets. It would take an injury to Helsley to give anyone a decent fantasy outlook.
Top Prospects
Quinn Mathews is the No. 45 prospect in the MLB, and has a 2025 ETA. Tink Hence is ranked 76th, and also should help out the big league team this season.
Cooper Hjerpe, Michael McGreevy, Tekoah Roby, Sem Robberse, Gordon Graceffo and Ian Bedell are all top-30 prospects of the team with 2025 ETAs.
Mathews logged 143 1/3 minor league innings in his lone season so far. He had a 2.76 ERA, while also having 202 strikeouts and 49 walks, along with a .179 average against him.
Hence has 236 minor league innings under his belt. He has a 3.28 ERA, 303 punchouts, 78 walks and a .225 average against him so far.
Hjerpe has worked just 93 1/3 minor league innings over the past two years. He has a 3.38 ERA, 127 strikeouts, 53 walks and a .176 average against him.
McGreevy made three starts across four MLB appearances last season. He went 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA in 23 innings, striking out 18, walking two and having just a .193 average against him. In 455 minor league innings, McGreevy has a 4.13 ERA, 385 punchouts, 114 walks and a .274 average against him.
Roby has worked 223 1/3 minor league innings, including just 38 1/3 in 2024. He has a 4.76 ERA, 269 strikeouts, 72 walks and a .247 average against him so far.
Robberse has 424 2/3 minor league innings to his name so far. In those frames, he has a 3.96 ERA, 406 punchouts, 157 walks and a .239 average against him.
Graffeco worked 7 2/3 MLB innings in 2024, going 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA, six strikeouts, two walks and a .250 average against him. In 381 1/3 minor league innings over four years, Graffeco has a 3.97 ERA, 364 strikeouts, 132 walks and a .251 average against him.
Bedell has 212 minor league innings under his belt, sporting a 3.78 ERA along the way. He also has 230 strikeouts, 82 walks and a .228 average against him.
I think several of the team's top-30 prospects could factor in heavily for 2025, especially if the team ends up selling at the trade deadline.
Roddery Munoz, Alex Cornwell, Max Rajcic, Drew Rom, Edwin Nunez, Andre Granillo and Oddanier Mosqueda are some other pitchers age 25 or under who spent time in camp with the Cardinals this season.
