Discussing some of the best hitting and pitching performances from September 2.

Top Hitters

Los Angeles Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernandez led the MLB with five hits on Monday. He had three singles, a double and a triple. Hernandez scored two runs and stole a base.

Cincinnati Reds’ Ty France delivered four hits. He had three singles and a double, while driving in a run and scoring once.

Arizona Diamondbacks’ Eugenio Suarez, Baltimore Orioles’ Austin Slater and Cedric Mullins, New York Yankees’ Gleyber Torres all had three hits.

Suarez had a single, double and home run. He drove in a run, scored three times and struck out once.

Slater had two singles and a double on the day. He drove in three, scored two runs, walked once and was also hit by a pitch.

Torres also had two singles and one double. He drove in a pair and scored one run.

Mullins had a single, double and home run. He drove in three runs, scored three times and struck out twice.

Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman, St. Louis Cardinals’ Pedro Pages and Oakland Athletics’ Shea Langeliers had two home runs each - each player finished with two hits. 

Freeman drove in five runs, scored twice, walked once and also had a sacrifice flyout.

Pages had two RBIs, two runs scored and one strikeout.

Langeliers tallied four RBIs, two runs scored and a strikeout.

Dodgers’ Mookie Betts scored three runs on Monday. He had a single, double and walk, along with three RBIs.

Milwaukee Brewers’ Jackson Chourio drove in four runs on a grand slam. He also walked three times and scored a second run.

Milwaukee’s Willy Adames drove in three runs on a home run. He also struck out once.

Pittsburgh Pirates’ Bryan Reynolds drove in three runs on a home run and walk. He finished with one run scored.

Minnesota Twins’ Trevor Larnach tallied three RBIs on a home run and two walks. He scored twice and struck out once.

Houston Astros’ Yainer Diaz drove in three runs on two singles. He also had a sacrifice flyout.

Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson drove in three runs on a home run, walk and sacrifice fly.

Baltimore’s Anthony Santander singled and walked three times on Monday. He drove in a run, scored once and struck out one time.

Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani had two singles and two walks. He stole three bases, scored twice and struck out once.

Cincinnati’s Jonathan India had a single and two walks. He scored one run.

Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. had two singles and two stolen bases. He drove in a run and scored once.

New York Mets’ Francisco Lindor had two singles and was also plunked by a pitch. He drove in a run, scored once and also was a strikeout victim.

Chicago White Sox’s Corey Julks had two singles and a walk. He drove in a run and scored once.

St. Louis’ Brendan Donovan had two singles and a walk as well. He scored once and was caught stealing.

Top Starting Pitchers

Chicago Cubs’ Jameson Taillon had the best start of the night, but didn’t get the win after the team blew a lead. He tossed seven scoreless innings, striking out three along the way. Taillon allowed three hits and one walk.

Mets’ Luis Severino allowed a run on six hits and two walks over seven innings and picked up a win. He struck out five batters.

Cleveland Guardians’ Gavin Williams had a similar line, getting a win after giving up a run on a hit and two walks over seven frames. He struck out six batters.

San Diego Padres’ Joe Musgrove tossed six scoreless innings and picked up a victory. He allowed three hits and two walks, while punching out eight.

Yankees’ Gerrit Cole allowed a run on four hits and a walk over six innings. He earned a win and struck out nine batters along the way.

Dodgers’ Jack Flaherty worked 5 2/3 innings and got a win on Monday. He surrendered a run on five hits and three walks, while punching out seven.

Baltimore’s Corbin Burnes was a winner after allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk over five frames. He struck out four along the way.

Seattle Mariners’ Logan Gilbert struck out nine batters over six innings, but didn’t get the win after allowing four runs. He gave up four hits and a walk.

Top Relief Pitchers

Cincinnati’s Justin Wilson, Pittsburgh’s Dennis Santana, Mets’ Phil Maton, Baltimore’s Cole Irvin, Minnesota’s Jhoan Duran, Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase and San Diego’s Robert Suarez all earned saves on Monday.

Wilson retired the only batter he faced to pick up a save.

Sanatana worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his save. He struck out one of the batters.

Maton also worked a perfect ninth inning, but struck out two batters.

Irvin got his save after working three innings. He allowed a run on two hits, while striking out two and walking none.

Duran worked a 1-2-3 inning for his save. He also had one strikeout.

Clase did not record a strikeout, but also didn’t allow any of the three batters he faced to reach.

Suarez faced just three hitters in his inning despite allowing a hit.

Boston Red Sox’s Josh Winckowski tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He allowed a hit and a walk, while striking out four batters.

Cincinnati’s Emilio Pagan earned a hold after getting seven outs. He allowed one hit, while striking out three and walking none.

St. Louis’ Kyle Leahy retired all seven batters he faced, punching out four of them.

Milwaukee’s Joe Ross allowed a walk in his two scoreless innings of work. He struck out four batters along the way.

Oakland Athletics’ Caleb Ferguson also worked two scoreless innings. He worked around three hits and a walk by striking out four batters.

Tampa Bay Rays’ Kevin Kelly also fired two scoreless frames in relief. He gave up a hit and struck out one batter.

Arizona’s Paul Sewald struck out three of the four batters he faced on the night.

Minnesota’s Jorge Alcala also had three strikeouts over 1 1/3 innings. He surrendered two hits.

Houston’s Forrest Whitley struck out three batters in an inning of work. He did allow a hit and walk in the frame.

Milwaukee’s Bryan Hudson earned a hold after getting five outs. He worked around two walks and struck out two batters.
